Huỳnh Như's emotional goal

On the closing day of the 2025 Asean Cup, Huỳnh Như stood out with a goal that increased the score to 2-0. This was her first goal in the competition.

From Nguyễn Thị Vạn’s long pass in the 64th minute, Huỳnh Như broke free into open space, outmaneuvered two Thai defenders, and found the net. Although her initial shot was blocked by goalkeeper Pawarisa, she followed up and scored on the rebound. This marked both her first and last goal of the tournament.

Huỳnh Như entered the 2025 Asean Cup determined to score after failing to find the net in all three Asian qualifiers in June. Despite this, during four group and semifinal matches, she played with great effort, covering every position on the pitch and assisting her teammates. In the group match against Thailand, Huỳnh Như was recognized as the most active player, but the most crucial thing for a striker—a goal—had still eluded the captain of Vietnam’s women’s team.

In the third-place match, fans hoped the 34-year-old would score to cap off the tournament. Finally, the last goal came. Not only did it relieve all pressure, it was also a statement from a legendary striker of Vietnamese women’s football.

The moment Huỳnh Như scored, Lạch Tray Stadium erupted. It wasn’t just Huỳnh Như or the fans—Coach Mai Đức Chung was overwhelmed with joy when his player struck. At 76 years old, he understands better than anyone the pressure Huỳnh Như has faced recently. After every post-match press conference, he constantly encouraged her and put his full trust in her. That trust was rewarded with a goal of great significance on August 19.

In the end, Vietnam’s women’s team defeated Thailand 3-1 to secure the bronze medal. With her goal in the 64th minute, Huỳnh Như was also named "Player of the Match". Although they couldn’t achieve the championship target set at the start, the team finished the tournament on a high and now looks ahead to their next goals at SEA Games 33.
