Alejandro Garnacho is experiencing one of the toughest periods of his career, having been excluded from Manchester United’s plans and losing his spot with the Argentina squad. The possibility of missing the 2026 World Cup is becoming a real concern for the 21-year-old talent.

Since coach Ruben Amorim officially took charge at Old Trafford, Garnacho has struggled to find his place. The Argentine winger was left out of the preseason training plans in July and has since been training alone at Carrington. Matters worsened when Man Utd listed him for transfer.

With his club future still unresolved, Garnacho’s international career has also taken a hit. Coach Lionel Scaloni has just announced Argentina’s squad for the World Cup qualifiers against Venezuela and Ecuador in September, and Garnacho’s name is once again missing.

Since the beginning of 2025, the winger has not received a single call-up, even though he previously made eight appearances for Argentina. His lack of regular playing time at Man Utd is the main reason why Scaloni left him out, as Argentina’s attack currently boasts many high-performing and quality options.

This decision serves as a wake-up call for Garnacho and his representatives. If he cannot secure a new club where he can play regularly, his chances of representing Argentina at the 2026 World Cup in the US are almost gone. Missing the world’s biggest football event could be the greatest regret in a player’s short career.

As a result, the 2025/26 season is set to be a pivotal moment for Garnacho. At 21, he had a solid last season, scoring 11 goals in 58 appearances for Man Utd. However, his current situation forces him to choose between staying at Old Trafford to fight for a starting spot in Ruben Amorim’s system or leaving to revive his career elsewhere.

According to English media, Garnacho has reached a personal agreement with Chelsea. Should the deal go through, the “Red Devils” would have to sell one of their brightest academy products to a direct Premier League rival. The main obstacle is the transfer fee; Garnacho’s contract runs until 2028, and Man Utd is unwilling to let him go cheaply. This is why negotiations remain stalled, even as Chelsea continues to show strong interest.

With Chelsea persisting in their pursuit, it seems likely that Garnacho could join the London club in a bid to save his career. Still, the final outcome depends on negotiations between the two sides.

In the meantime, Garnacho can only keep training on his own at Carrington, as his World Cup dream drifts further away.
