After losing to Arsenal in their first match, Manchester United is dealing with more personnel changes as young defender Harry Amass is said to want to leave the club during the summer transfer window.

Manchester United kicked off the 2024/25 Premier League season with a 0-1 loss to Arsenal at Old Trafford. Although Ruben Amorim’s side dominated the game and had 22 shots compared to Arsenal’s 9, Riccardo Calafiori’s lone goal in the first half sealed the result.

However, after the final whistle, public attention shifted from the match itself to off-field stories. Both Rasmus Hojlund and Andre Onana were surprising absentees from the squad list. Hojlund is reportedly being considered by AC Milan for a loan move, while Onana’s future is uncertain as Amorim opted for Altay Bayindir and Tom Heaton. Among those missing, 18-year-old defender Harry Amass’s situation has drawn particular curiosity.

Amass was part of the post-season tour in Hong Kong in May, but was absent from the summer friendlies. According to BBC Sport, he was recently withdrawn from the U21 squad for the match against Tamworth in the Youth National Cup, as he prepares for a potential loan move.

Amass’s likely destination is said to be Sheffield Wednesday. The club previously faced a crisis when the EFL imposed a transfer ban due to unpaid wages over two consecutive months. As a result, several key players ended their contracts and left. The ban was lifted on August 10 after debts were settled, but Wednesday will not be able to spend money on transfers or loan deals until 2027.

Despite these challenges, Sheffield Wednesday is still looking to strengthen their squad to improve their situation. In their recent 0-3 home defeat to Stoke City, aside from striker Ike Ugbo, the entire bench consisted of U21 players, clearly showing their shortage of experienced players.

BBC reporter Karan Vinod noted that although no agreement has been reached yet, Amass is “pushing” Manchester United for a loan move, hoping for regular first-team opportunities. This is considered an important step in the young English defender’s career development.
