Bruno Fernandes reiterated that Manchester United is the club he most wants to represent while explaining his refusal of the high-priced invitation from Saudi Arabian club Al Hilal this summer. At that time, Al Hilal was prepared to pay €100 million in transfer fees to Manchester United and offer the player a tax-free contract worth €100 million over four years, which would triple his earnings with the Red Devils.
However, the 30-year-old Fernandes outright rejected the offer, meaning there was no formal dialogue between the two clubs. In an interview with Portugal's A Bola, Fernandes explained, "I know that numbers are the most important thing in football, and the club could have received a significant amount through my transfer fee. So, I understand that this is difficult for the club. I only spoke to the president of Al Hilal once, telling him that I never considered leaving Manchester United. Therefore, whatever he wants to do or not do, he should negotiate with Manchester United. I have always said that if Manchester United wants to sell, then I can leave, but they must make the decision."
Fernandes added, "If Manchester United does not want me to stay, then I don’t need to make a choice. For me, that would also be a high income. But that is the reality; people need to make various decisions. I know I won’t regret it because I am where I want to be."
Fast forward to this month, there are rumors that Al Nassr also wishes to acquire the Portuguese star. The team’s coach, José Jesus, acknowledged that he hopes to bring in a former player he collaborated with at Sporting Lisbon, but Fernandes once again declined the Saudi offer. Jesus stated, "Bruno has decided to stay at Manchester United; we talked about this last year, and I know he has chosen to continue working with Amorim. But people say that the Premier League he participates in is the best league in the world, and I disagree; I believe La Liga is."
Fernandes will face new challenges in the upcoming season, as his position may need to be adjusted to one of the two midfield roles in a 3-4-3 formation following the arrivals of Shevchenko, Mbemo, and Cunha. This will not be an easy task for the Portuguese international, who is not particularly strong defensively.
Cunha, the first player Manchester United signed during the summer transfer window, has already integrated into the team. The Sun reported that he spent £5 million to purchase the former home of ex-Red Devils striker Zlatan Ibrahimović. Ibrahimović played at Old Trafford for over a season and is now an executive at AC Milan in Italy.
Cunha not only donned the number 10 jersey that Ibrahimović wore but also bought the luxurious mansion located in the Hale area of Manchester, where Ibrahimović previously lived. The mansion features six bedrooms with en-suite bathrooms, as well as a gym, bar, cinema, studio, and swimming pool. The 26-year-old Brazilian forward will settle in Manchester with his wife Gabriela and their two children.
With a transfer fee of £62.5 million, Cunha naturally hopes to replicate Ibrahimović's achievements at Manchester United. The Swedish striker played 53 matches for the Red Devils between 2016 and 2018, scoring 29 goals and winning the UEFA Europa League, the EFL Cup, and the Community Shield.
New teammate Benjamin Šeško might regret arriving a step late, as he has admired Ibrahimović since childhood and learned many of his playing styles, but now he will not be able to live in his idol’s former home in Manchester.
However, Šeško may prefer to learn from his idol's performance on the field. "He plays joyfully, enjoying himself on the pitch, doing what he wants to do. Seeing players like that makes me genuinely happy. So, I have watched almost every video of him that I could find."
