Amorim says Manchester United can't play like Portugal, and he is not a Ferdin! Celebrating after the game, there was a near-miss

Speaking about his own role in managing Manchester United after beating Pep Guardiola's Manchester City in the Champions League, Ruben Amorim downplayed the role of Sporting to win because they were two different teams and the Red Devils couldn't play like Portugal.

Speaking after the game, the 39-year-old said: "What I can tell you is that it doesn't mean anything special, don't jump to any conclusions. We can't transfer one reality to another, Manchester United can't play the way we [Sporting] do, we have to adapt."

Amorim played almost exclusively at the back three during his time at Sporting de Portugal, while Manchester United, as well as the vast majority of Premier League teams, mostly used a back four. However, Amorim is looking forward to an adventure at his new club. "It's going to be fun, it's going to be a lot of fun and I'm ready for the challenge," Amorim said.

Amorim's final game in charge of Sporting de Portugal will take place this Sunday, when he will face Braga, who has also been in charge before. His first game for Manchester United will be at Portman Road on 24 November against Ipswich Town.

During the final home match, Sporting fans unfurled a huge banner featuring Amorim and the trophy he had won, with the huge Portuguese word "Obrigado" in the background, which means "thank you".

The whole Portuguese team lined up on the sidelines, patting Amorim to pay his respects, and the farewell ceremony ended with the manager being enthusiastically thrown into the air. But they were so excited that they almost caused Amorim to fall down his face. The players then gave up the toss and let him land safely.

Others have found parallels between Amorim and Manchester United's legendary manager Sir Alex Ferguson. When he took over the Red Devils in 1986, United had just 12 points from 10 League One games, having only managed in Scotland at the time. Now, when Amorim was appointed, United were also on 12 points from 10 games, and Amorim had only managed in Portugal.

After Sporting Portugal's Champions League win against Manchester City, The Sun ran a big-word headline: Ferguson time, maybe Ruben is really the new Ferguson!

Of course, there is still one Premier League game left before Amorim takes over, and the points are likely to be boosted. Moreover, Amorim certainly does not want to be like Fergus, because the team lost 0-2 in the first game of the old man's coach! He has denied that he is Mourinho II, and this time he does not consider himself to be a new generation of Ferdin.

Amorim joked: "If I don't have a good result against Manchester City, expectations will go down; If we win, people will think that the new Ferguson is coming! But I'm only interested in winning and then starting a new adventure in Manchester."

Once Amorim is in charge of Manchester United, he and Pep Guardiola will reunite on 15 December for their first Manchester derby of the season at the Etihad Stadium, with the second leg currently scheduled for 25 April next year.

Pep Guardiola alluded to Manchester United in his post-match press conference: "We will play Ruben [Amorim] twice in the Premier League and maybe in the FA Cup. But in the Champions League, that's not possible. Then let's see how it turns out. I've learned something from all the coaches I've met, and I think Ruben has too. But what I care about is getting us back to the best we can and we're going to try to do that."
