After Amorin took charge of Manchester United, the first key player he signed was left-back Patrick Dorrug. The Danish international, who joined from Lecce for €35 million, performed well in the summer friendlies, and the head coach believes he can be developed into an outstanding player similar to Paris Saint-Germain's tough defender Nuno Mendes.
Mendes started his career at Sporting Lisbon, where he worked with Amorin, and was once linked with a transfer to Manchester United this year, but he ultimately renewed his contract and stayed at Paris Saint-Germain.
Manchester United has signed the 20-year-old Dorrug, who, despite a rocky start and some rough technical skills that drew criticism from fans, is said by insiders to be "Ruben (Amorin) is a huge fan of Dorrug!" according to The Sun.
During the summer training camp, Amorin arranged special training for Dorrug to hone his skills, making him one of the biggest gains from their trip to the USA. Dorrug played a crucial role in all three matches of Manchester United's Premier League summer series, especially contributing with a goal and an assist against Bournemouth.
Comparing Dorrug to Mendes, the left-back who played a key role in Paris Saint-Germain's Champions League victory, seems a stretch, but it clearly shows how highly Amorin rates him. In the new season, Dorrug is sure to be the starting left wing-back, which means that 30-year-old Luke Shaw will lose his position on the left flank.
Luke Shaw, who joined in 2014, is now the most senior player in the squad. He hopes to earn a spot in Tuchel's England squad for the 2026 World Cup in the USA, Canada, and Mexico; however, he may struggle to play in his most familiar left-back position. Nicknamed "England's Carlos," Luke Shaw may need to transition into a left center-back role.
The Sun reports that as the longest-serving player in the squad, Luke Shaw is also disappointed about not being included in the six-man leadership group named by Amorin. The new leadership group in the Manchester United locker room includes captain Bruno Fernandes along with Maguire, Mazraoui, Lisandro Martinez, Diogo Dalot, and Tom Heaton.
What confuses Luke Shaw even more is that 19-year-old center-back Lainy Yoro has almost been designated as one of the locker room leaders. Although Amorin ultimately decided not to involve Yoro for now, he believes the young Frenchman will be a pillar of the defense in the future and could become a club legend.
British media reports that Luke Shaw has been complaining about his exclusion, while Amorin hopes he can put this behind him as the new season begins. It is said that his mood has affected his performance in training, and he seems not to be fully committed.
Luke Shaw has two years left on his contract with Manchester United, earning £150,000 a week. He was once considered the best left-back in the Premier League, but his defensive skills, especially his positional sense, have always been a weakness. Worse still, Luke Shaw is frequently injured, spending more time on the sidelines than in training and matches during his over ten years at Manchester United.
Amorin and Manchester United fans have also criticized Luke Shaw for prioritizing England national team matches, as he recently stated that Shaw often encounters issues at the club, yet he steps up during major national team finals.
British media reported this month that if Luke Shaw cannot secure a starting position at Manchester United in the new season, he may consider a transfer to the Saudi Pro League as early as the winter transfer window in January.
