After turning down a transfer offer from Al-Hilal in June, Manchester United captain Bruno Fernandes has once again said no to the Saudi Pro League. At that time, Al-Hilal was prepared to spend £80 million to bring Bruno in and offered his agent an impressive weekly salary of £700,000, with a total contract value of £200 million, but he decided to remain at Old Trafford.
Fernandes declined Al-Hilal's lucrative offer because Manchester United manager Ruben Amorim insisted that he is a key part of his revival plan. Reports from the Portuguese newspaper O Jogo this week indicate that another Riyadh club, Al-Nassr, has now extended an olive branch to Bruno.
The team's coach, Jorge Jesus, was the one who gave Bruno his debut at Sporting Lisbon, and he is personally advocating for this transfer, hoping to reunite with his former player Bruno to form a "Portuguese contingent" with Cristiano Ronaldo, Otávio, and João Félix to challenge for the league title.
The 25-year-old Félix officially joined Al-Nassr this week for a fixed transfer fee of £26 million, with additional clauses potentially raising it to £43 million. Manchester United hopes that Al-Nassr will sign Antony, but the latter seems more interested in acquiring Bruno.
Al-Nassr believes that the Portuguese connection within the team may attract Bruno. Rumors suggest that Cristiano Ronaldo personally reached out to Bruno, hoping to persuade him to play for Al-Nassr. This summer, the Portuguese superstar renewed his contract and received a share of the club, giving him some influence over its operations.
However, while some Manchester United fans believe Bruno should be sold to facilitate genuine squad reform, the club, Amorim, and Bruno himself seem to have no such intention. Reports indicate that the 30-year-old Portuguese midfielder has once again declined the invitation from the oil-rich club, determined to stay with the Red Devils to continue his development.
Fernandes explained his decision to stay at Manchester United in June, stating: "It was an easy choice. Although Al-Hilal has Ruben Neves and João Cancelo, both of whom I have a strong friendship with, I want to remain at the highest level and participate in major competitions because I still feel capable. I had the opportunity to go to Saudi Arabia; the president of Al-Hilal called me to ask if I would join, and they were waiting for my response. I spoke with coach Amorim, and he told me not to leave. Manchester United does not want to sell me; they do not need the money. If I wanted to leave, they would let me go."
Bruno's Manchester United teammates also do not want him to leave. The £71 million new signing Mbemo said: "Who am I most excited to play with? Of course, it's Bruno (Fernandes)! Everyone has seen him over the past few years. He can shoot, dribble, and make incredible plays. For a forward, you just have to enjoy that."
Mbemo is likely to partner with Bruno in the friendly against Everton on Monday, and he revealed that they are getting to know each other: "I’m happy to communicate with him. Ultimately, on the pitch, having a smart teammate like him means you don’t have to think too much; just make your runs, and he can always find the ball in the right space. We can discuss how I like to receive passes and what type of passes I handle best."
In addition to keeping Bruno, Mbemo also hopes that Manchester United will sign Ollie Watkins from Aston Villa, as they played together at Watford in the Championship. "I think Ollie (Watkins) is genuinely competitive; he’s like a versatile forward who can do a lot of things."
