Feyenoord and Fenerbahce have faced each other only twice in official matches, both occurring during the 2016/17 UEFA Europa League. The Turkish giants secured victories in both encounters with scores of 1-0, thanks to goals from Emmanuel Emenike and Moussa Sow.
The upcoming match between the two teams means Feyenoord's coach Robin van Persie will return to the Sukru Saracoglu Stadium for the first time since departing from Fenerbahce in 2018. After leaving Manchester United in 2015, the Premier League legend spent two and a half seasons in Istanbul, where he scored 36 goals in 87 appearances for Fenerbahce.

Feyenoord, who advanced to the UEFA Champions League's third qualifying round after finishing third in last season's Eredivisie, will face the Super Lig runners-up without their star player Igor Paixaoas the Brazilian forward recently suffered a muscle injury and is on his way to Olympique Marseille. Vice-captain David Hancko is also expected to miss the qualifiers as the Slovakian international is finalizing a transfer to Saudi club Al-Nassr.
Feyenoord and Fenerbahce are scheduled to meet on August 5th or 6th for the home match, and on August 12th for the away match.
Feyenoord will start their Eredivisie season on August 9th with a home game against NAC Breda, while Fenerbahce will play their first Super Lig match on the same day against Alanyaspor.
