England defender Lucy Bronze stated that the expansion of women's football has resulted in a rise in racist harassment directed at players, as the sport attracts more fans and draws greater attention.

Bronze, who played a crucial role in England's quarter-final win against Sweden at EURO 2025 on Thursday, held a heartfelt press conference after her teammateJess Carter, who is Black, revealed she had been subjected to racist abuse since the tournament commenced.

"As the game grows, so does the noise, the number of fans increases, but so do the critics,," Bronze remarked.

"We are certainly receptive to criticism—that's part of what makes us passionate about the sport—but we will not tolerate abuse. Particularly in women's football, the online harassment appears to be escalating..

"We notice it more in men's football at stadiums and online, but it seems that women's football has become a specific target online.

"It's something we are very conscious of. There are ways to initiate change. There is a solution. I don’t have the answer, but I am confident there is one."

Bronze was questioned about whether the abuse Carter experienced might deter other young Black players from representing England.

"I hope those players understand that, regardless of their experiences, they will receive support from this team, that we do not accept these behaviors, and that we aim to advocate for change, not only in football but in society, so that these young players can aspire to become heroes and legends of the England team," she responded.

“We are fostering an environment where those players can excel, be their authentic selves, regardless of their backgrounds or circumstances, and represent England on the greatest stage."

England will face Italy in the semi-finals on Tuesday in Geneva."
