In their first summer warm-up match, Manchester United drew 0-0 with Leeds United. New signings Kunya and Diego Layon started, but the match was uneventful and sleep-inducing. The only takeaway, as players often say, was that they played for 45 minutes.
The match was held at the Strawberry Stadium in Stockholm, Sweden, which is also where Manchester United won the Europa League by beating Ajax 2-0 in 2017. Manchester United and Leeds United are fierce rivals, known for the "Red and White Roses" rivalry. However, in this match, the Red Devils wore their newly released white and light purple away kit, while Leeds donned blue, and there was no sign of any conflict.
Kunya wore the number 10 jersey, playing as one of the two attacking midfielders in a 3-4-3 formation, surprisingly alongside young player Toby Collyer. Captain Bruno Fernandes partnered with Casemiro in midfield, while Layon played as a left wing-back, and the striker was 17-year-old Chido Obi.
To allow fans to arrive, the match was delayed by 10 minutes. Ultimately, over 45,000 spectators attended, but they did not witness an exciting game. In the first half, striker Obi had a few shots, but either they were saved by the Leeds goalkeeper or he misfired due to poor footing. Kunya, who cost £62.5 million, criticized his decision-making.
Manchester United's closest chance to score in the first half was not a shot on goal; Casemiro crossed from the right, and the ball deflected off a defender, nearly resulting in an own goal, but it was ultimately denied by the crossbar. At halftime, Manchester United and Leeds United were still 0-0.
In the second half, Amorim replaced the entire starting lineup, bringing on Hoylund, Kobe Meno, Ugart, and Maguire, but there was still no difference, as Manchester United failed to score again. The standout player was 39-year-old goalkeeper Tom Heaton, whose two brilliant saves ensured the Red Devils remained level.
Leeds United's wingers, Daniel James and Ramazani, both former Manchester United players, posed a threat to Amorim's 3-4-3 strategy with their speed. Jadon Bogle's breakthrough on the right resulted in a one-on-one chance, but Heaton denied him.
Soon after, Heaton had to face another one-on-one from Ramazani on the left, and he saved the team again. Despite approaching his 40th birthday, Heaton seemed to be a more stable goalkeeping option than Alty Bayindir.
In the first half of the second period, Leeds United completely dominated, but Manchester United controlled the field towards the end of the match. Unfortunately, the players still couldn't find their "shooting boots." Diogo Dalot once set up left wing-back Patrick Dorrington, but the latter blasted the ball into the stands behind the goal.
Even more amusingly, Dorrington's shot in the penalty area was blocked by the backside of his Danish teammate Hoylund!
The striker wearing the number 9 jersey was largely absent in the second half but had a bad temper. When Dalot passed the ball into the box but hesitated, the "cargo ship" believed it might lead to an offside, causing him to shout in frustration, "For God's sake." This could also reflect the fans' perception of Hoylund.
Interestingly, during stoppage time, when Dalot passed the ball to Dorrington instead of taking it himself, Hoylund again criticized his teammate. Manchester United needs a new number 9; if teammates still have to pass to Hoylund next season, they might lack confidence, which is not much different from passing to an opponent...
Before the match ended, Mason Mount took a corner, and Hoylund finally contributed, as his header created chaos in the box. Unfortunately, Meno's header hit the crossbar and his follow-up shot was blocked by a defender. In the end, both sides shook hands with a 0-0 draw.
Coach Amorim was not satisfied with Manchester United's performance: "We struggled with high pressing because Leeds United played direct long balls, and they posed a threat in winning second balls. We lacked speed, especially in midfield; you could feel it was hard to set the rhythm. We still created opportunities, but the team has a lot to work on, and we need to improve the quality in the attacking third."
He emphasized that Kunya can bring what Manchester United lacks: "Kunya showed us what we need, which is the ability to receive the ball between the lines and actively advance towards the opponent. We observed his performance at Wolves last season and expect him to do the same in our team. He and Bruno (Fernandes) haven't established a connection yet, but that has potential, and you can include Kobe (Meno) and Mount in that mix."
After this match, Manchester United will fly to Chicago, USA, on Tuesday to kick off their summer series in the Premier League. Amorim, who has dropped five players, emphasized the need for a harmonious atmosphere within the team. "I think the environment is really good; sometimes we struggle, but we work hard together, and that's just the beginning. The team must raise its level; in this club, just working hard is not enough; you must have strength and win matches."
