Chelsea's head coach Enzo Maresca has compared Sunday’s Club World Cup final against Paris Saint-Germain to a game of chess, as the Blues get ready to challenge the Champions League titleholders and Ligue 1 powerhouses in a much-anticipated encounter.

While speaking to the press on Friday at MetLife Stadium in New Jersey, Maresca highlighted the strategic aspect of the match, which pits his team against Luis Enrique’s PSG.

“I have a great passion for chess, and I notice many parallels between chess and football,” Maresca stated.

“From a tactical perspective, I don't believe in making chess moves during the game, but the coach must respond when the opposing coach reacts.

“Certainly, this will be a challenging chess match against Luis Enrique, but we will certainly try to enjoy it.”

Maresca, who has led Chelsea to the final with a blend of defensive strength and attacking creativity, expressed admiration for his counterpart.

“Without a doubt, PSG and their coach, Luis Enrique, serve as a benchmark not just for me but for many football enthusiasts. I think they possess an extraordinary team, and their manager is, alongside Pep Guardiola, among the best in the world today,” he remarked.

“This is a squad filled with remarkable players. It will be a tough and exciting challenge, but we have our own style. We’ve demonstrated how we intend to play.”

Chelsea’s semi-final triumph over Brazilian team Fluminense featured new acquisition Joao Pedro making a significant impact, scoring twice in the 2-0 victory.

However, Maresca remained tight-lipped about whether the 60-million-pound forward, signed from Brighton & Hove Albion last week, would be included in the starting lineup for the final.

“Joao Pedro is an excellent player. We acquired him because we believe he will assist us. He possesses great talent,” Maresca commented.

“We have 48 hours before the final. We are fortunate to have various options available. We’ll see if he will play in the final.”
