The 39-year-old Swiss player collided with Crew midfielder Amar Sejdic in the closing moments and fell after being hit in the head by the knee of the attacker, which led medical staff to rush onto the field.
Frei was transported by ambulance to a hospital in Seattle for assessment.
"I'm still trying to understand what transpired at the end of the match," Frei shared on X.
"I am extremely thankful to all the staff who took care of me and relieved to be back home resting now.
"What resonates with me are all the messages, calls, and love I have received from so many of you. Thank you - sincerely. It means more than I can express. I feel your support and I’m grateful for each one of you."
Sounders coach Brian Schmetzer and Columbus coach Wilfried Nancy requested to stop the match before playing the final seconds.
"I appreciate what Wilfried did because the referee wasn't going to halt the game," Schmetzer remarked. "Everyone knew the game should have been stopped. Kudos to him. So thank you, Wilfried."
Nancy concurred that the match should have been halted.
"When you witness a situation like that, once again, football isn't the most important thing," he stated. "We remain optimistic, and hopefully, everything will turn out well for him."
Both teams are competing for spots in the MLS playoffs.
The Sounders currently sit fifth in the Western Conference with 30 points, while the Crew are fourth in the Eastern Conference with 38 points.
