The Manchester Evening News reported that Manchester United will officially sign 39-year-old England goalkeeper Tom Heaton to a short-term one-year contract extension this week. The club confirmed last week that they are in talks with the Academy graduate to renew his contract, with the signing expected to be announced this week.
Many fans don't understand why they have to spend £40,000 a week to keep the aging Heaton, and they feel it's perfectly fine to put a young academy goalkeeper in that role. But in fact, the No. 3 goalkeeper of each team is usually a veteran, because this "sparring" role is actually very important, and to a certain extent, it is also equivalent to a coach. Heaton has plenty of experience and England even invited him to join during the European Championship to help the team practice.
Heaton came through the Manchester United Academy but failed to make his senior debut before moving to Cardiff City, Burnley and Aston Villa before winning and even being selected for England. In 2021, Heaton returned to the Red Devils and finally made his senior debut.
Ole Gunnar Solskjaer would have wanted to drop De Gea and make Dean Henderson the number one. Unexpectedly, Henderson was injured for two months after contracting the new crown, De Gea relocked the main position, Henderson could only continue to be a substitute after his return, and Heaton was the No. 3 goalkeeper.
Heaton made his Champions League group stage debut against Bern Juniors in December 2021 and made two appearances under Ten Hag, against Charlton Athletic and Nottingham Forest in the Carabao Cup. United were hoping to part ways with him this summer, but there was an unexpected situation and now Andre Onana is expected to stay, with backup goalkeeper Bagendil likely to leave, and Amorim opting to stay with Heaton and continue as the number 3 goalkeeper.
BRITISH MEDIA "GIVEMESPORT" REPORTED THAT THE POSSIBILITY OF ONANA'S DEPARTURE FROM THE SUMMER WINDOW IS ALREADY VERY LOW. Transfer expert Ben Jacobs explained: "Onana remained focused on Manchester United during his sabbatical stay as he was not told he would be sold or at risk of losing his regular starting XI position. The club's influencer is assessing the transfer market and informing him of their decision. The original plan was for Bayndir to leave and the club to bring in a replacement for him."
According to the report, Manchester United manager Amorim told the board that goalkeeper reinforcements are not a priority and he has not considered a replacement for Onana for the time being. The 29-year-old Cameroon international will be given at least another season and Amorim trusts him and believes his skills at his feet could help the team if there is a more consistent system.
That is not good news for Aston Villa's Emiliano Martinez, as the 32-year-old Argentine international has expressed his desire to join Manchester United, having already bid farewell to Villa fans at the end of last season. But the deal for Martin is not simple, with Villa priced at £40 million and the player's contract until 2029. And if Onana doesn't leave, the Red Devils can't afford to pay such a high price for a goalkeeper.
Former Manchester United chief scout Mike Brown explained: "Villa will sell Big Martin and if Amorim decides to change goalkeepers, he will be one of the top targets. Big Martin has recently changed agents and is now in charge of Jorge Mendes, who is well-connected at Manchester United. But the problem at the moment is Onana, and if he doesn't go, there will be no follow-up. Manchester United want Martin, but only if Onana leaves."
Once Onana stays, Bayndir, who has only made 11 appearances for Manchester United, will leave in order to play more games and he is likely to return to the Turkish Super League. In that case, United will bring in a young goalkeeper to replace the number 2 goalkeeper.
