Amorim insists Manchester United remain world-class giants and players dream of playing for them and will not bring in a team that must qualify for the Champions League. But the reality is brutal, and after missing out on a £30 million signing of Liam Delap, United have suffered another huge blow in their pursuit of another target. Crystal Palace's French striker Jean-Philippe Mateta has said he would like to join the Champions League squad as well, and if not, he would rather stay at Selhurst Park.
Amorim is keen to sign a striker this summer to replace underperforming Hojlund, with Napoli's Osimhen and Sporting Jzekereish the initial favourites. But with the team missing out on the Champions League, not only will they not be able to attract these big-name goalscorers, but they will also have no money to bring them in.
The 27-year-old Crystal Palace striker is another name on the shortlist, having been consistent with the London Eagles over the last two seasons, helping them to an upset win over Manchester City and an FA Cup this season. The stats show that since manager Oliver Glasner took over, Mateta has scored second only to Isak, Erling Haaland and Mohamed Salah.
Such data is enough for Matteta to attract the attention of many European teams, such as Inter Milan in Serie A and Marseille in Ligue 1, all of which have been linked with him. Former Manchester United boss Erik ten Hag is also hoping to beat his old club and bring Mateta to Bayer Leverkusen.
Manchester United was revealed to be interested in Mateta as early as February this year, but the British media "talkSPORT radio" reported that Mateta wants to play in the Champions League, and he hopes to attract more attention from international football in order to be selected for the French team to play in next year's World Cup. Otherwise, he might as well stay at the Crystal Palace. Manchester United will not have a Champions League next season, while Crystal Palace can play in the Europa League instead. Mateta's contract with the club expires in 2027 and he would consider renewing his contract if he is unable to move to a Champions League side.
In addition to disliking United's depravity, Mateta is certainly not happy with the Red Devils only using him as a backup option in the reserve, and if it were not for the inability to bring in Djekereish, Osimhen and Delap, Sir Jim Ratcliffe and Amorim do not think much of Mateta, especially because he is too old to turn 28 this summer.
At the moment, Manchester United has no name for nothing, and can only use all kinds of strange reasons to maintain its attractiveness in the transfer market. Bild's Christian Farke, for example, has claimed that the Red Devils hope the presence of the head of the transfer department, Christopher Vivel, could be a "secret weapon" in bringing in RB Leipzig striker Benjamin Seshko.
In April, Vivel traveled to Wolfsburg, Germany, to watch Seshko play. In 2019, while working at Red Bull Salzburg, he recruited 16-year-old Seshko into the team. Vivier later moved to Chelsea and joined the Reds following Rajue's takeover, initially as a 'temporary worker' but replaced sacked sporting director Dan Ashworth as head of transfers in February.
Of course, the existence of a transfer director does not actually have much influence on the transfer of players, and no one will choose a team for the sake of the director. The 22-year-old has no reason to choose the current Manchester United unless he gets an incredible promise. Let's face it, if you were a top player, would you choose the team that is the worst run in the Premier League and all of Europe?
This is the fundamental reason why Manchester United's forward line has hit a wall everywhere. Unless a player like Wolves' Cunha has supported United since childhood, and has played for a team with a worse record than the Red Devils, it is possible to choose Amorim's side to try and make history of reviving the Red Devils.
