Manchester United travelled south to London on Thursday for the next day's Premier League round 37 tie against Chelsea. With the Red Devils and Tottenham meeting in the Europa League final, the league has brought forward the current round of fixtures for both teams to Friday night. Lenny Yoro, who was injured against West Ham United in the squad for Stamford Bridge, was absent, but 18-year-old centre-back Eden Haven has returned to take his place.
The Manchester Evening News reported that Manchester United had arrived at Stockport station from Carrington and took the train to London for the game. Haven is one of the players who has walked off the bus, having joined from Arsenal in the January winter transfer window for a transfer fee of just £1.5 million, but has been in fine form in a few Premier League appearances. However, the England centre-back has suffered a recurrence of injury after picking up an injury against Leicester City in March and has missed seven games.
Haven was last named in United's squad on 13 April at Newcastle United, but he did not feature in that 4-1 defeat. Last week, as United prepared for the second leg of the Europa League semi-final, he was spotted training alone at Carrington. Haven was also absent from the team's open training session on Wednesday, so the trip to Chelsea came as a bit of a surprise.
However, Haven's return from injury would be an inspiration for boss Ruben Amorim, who is missing a centre-back and suffered a 2-0 defeat at West Ham, with Harry Maguire partnering two wing-backs Mazraoui and Luke Shaw in United's starting three. The 19-year-old and the 25-year-old De Ligt will both miss the Premier League clash with Chelsea through injury and will have to race against time to reach the Europa League final, while Lisandro Martinez has already been out for the season. In the two legs of the semi-final against Athletic Bilbao, Victor Lindelof, who is about to leave Manchester United, was given the opportunity to play.
United's other returning player is also a youngster, with Academy midfielder Toby Collier in the squad missing six weeks with a leg injury, having last been named in the squad for a Premier League defeat at Nottingham Forest on 1 April. Collier, who can play at the back and left-back, could add to United's bench options.
In his pre-match press conference, Amorim hinted that he would be playing with his full squad for Chelsea, and claimed that the Europa League starting line-up had yet to be confirmed and that there were still places to be contested. British media predict that Andre Onana, Maguire, Mazraoui, Patrick Dolgu, Casemiro, Ugarte, Bruno Fernandes, Amad Diallo and Hojlund will all start. Amorim didn't even bring forward Cheedo Obi to London, foreshadowing his selection of players for the game.
Amorim said: 'Is the squad against Chelsea the same as against Tottenham? I don't know yet. I've figured out the squad for Chelsea and the way we play, and then I'll look at it and that's important to decide who to use for the next game. The best way to prepare is to play games to prepare for the final and win the game. We need to perform and get points in the Premier League. That's how I feel, we talked about it after the West Ham game. We have to improve the way we face the game and stay focused every minute. Against West Ham we had a clear chance to score but didn't take it and the opponent scored at the first chance. These details are important."
The Europa League final is only played on Wednesday, a full five days after the Premier League, and Amorim believes there is plenty of time for his main players to recover. 'I know the only way to prepare for a final is to play in a normal Premier League game and we have to play the final. The United boss explained, "Then we try to recover. The best way to prepare for the finals is to play. It is also crucial for players to understand that there is no direct link between whether or not they play at Chelsea and the final. I'm preparing for the game against Chelsea and that's my focus at the moment. We have to win, and we have to perform well."
A win away to Chelsea would temporarily move up to 14th with a game in hand, and the club's potential highest league position this season is 13th, the joint-worst since the 1974 relegation season. But if the Red Devils lose to Chelsea and Tottenham don't lose against Aston Villa, Amorim's side will drop to 17th!
Amorim said he was crazy to see the dismal rankings, record defeats and negative goal difference, and thought the same should be true for the players, and he shouldn't have to care.
"It's hard to imagine you not look like a madman when it comes to this." "But if you look at the expected goals in the last game, we had more than the opposition. Against Wolves, it was a close pitch and we had chances to score, but the winner was the first time they came close to our goal from a set-piece. We had chances, especially in the second half. But I can understand and cope. Easier said than done, let's focus on playing well and preparing for the future after the season."
