Manchester United had a 45-minute open training session on Wednesday ahead of the Premier League trip to Chelsea, with more than 30 players involved, but centre-backs Lenny Yoro and De Ligt were among them. Among them, 19-year-old Frenchman Joro limped out of Old Trafford after an uncontested 2-0 defeat to West Ham United last weekend, and was in tears when he left the pitch after a suspected recurrence of an old injury in his left foot that he had undergone surgery last summer.
British media revealed that Yoro was unable to attend Wednesday's normal training, but he was spotted walking into Carrington's gym and reportedly practicing in the gym. He doesn't need to rest or wear protective gear during training, which means he still has a chance to catch up with next week's Europa League final.
Coach Amorim said after the game that Yoro's injury "could just be a minority". However, the small problems mentioned by the 40-year-old Portuguese marshal may not necessarily be small. De Ligt is a case in point, with the Dutch centre-back suffering a knee injury in the 4-3 defeat to Brentford in early May, and Amorim also saying his injury was not a major problem, however, the "Fat Der" has been out for 10 days and missed two games, and his availability for Chelsea on Friday is also in doubt.
Referring to the possibility of Joro, De Ligt and another injured main defender, Diogu Darlow, participating in the Europa League final, Amorim insisted he would give them plenty of time to prove themselves. Portuguese full-back Darlow was expected to be out for the season after picking up an injury against Wolves, but he took part in training on Wednesday and did not train with the whole squad and had to practice alone under the guidance of physical trainer Jordan Reese. He was also interviewed, with Amorim confirming that he is trying to recover before the final.
Amorim said: "I don't know yet if they'll be able to compete, but we'll do our best, and it's the final! All the players are very hungry to play and they certainly won't be able to play for Chelsea, but maybe someone can play in the final. Darlow worked very hard and I didn't want him to take any risks because once you get your first injury, it's a high probability that you get hurt a second time. It shouldn't be like that in our squad, but he's working very hard to get to the final."
If Joro and De Ligt are not available, United's centre-back selection will be affected. Lisandro Martinez has been out for the season and 18-year-old Eden Haven is also injured and did not attend Wednesday's training, so Amorim can only use healthy centre-backs such as Harry Maguire, Victor Lindelof and Evans, while full-backs Mazraoui and Luke Shaw can make cameos. In terms of returning players from injury, Evans and Academy midfielder Toby Collier both returned to training this week, with veteran Evans starting only in Amorim's opening game and is set to retire this summer and is unlikely to play in the final.
Manchester United have been losing money for five years in a row, and owner Sir Jim Ratcliffe has been cutting costs and cutting money since buying a stake in the club, and he has refused to give free tickets to club employees, including some coaches, physiotherapists and support staff, in the Europa League final. British media disclosed that Lajue told employees that they each had a quota of two tickets, but they needed to pay for themselves. The move upset Amorim and many of United's players and the Red Devils boss decided to pay out of his own pocket by arranging for 30 behind-the-scenes staff to take their families to the final.
"First of all, it's simple. You know there's a lot going on at the club, somebody getting fired, there's a lot of staff changing. They explained the problem to me and my reaction was to want to help, which didn't affect my life but helped the staff feel more comfortable. The players reacted in the same way, everyone wanted their families to be in Bilbao and the staff to be in Bilbao. We can't manage things at the club, so it's simple, I can pay for it myself. It's been a tough season, not only the results, but also the personnel changes, you can feel it. But the Europa League final is a little bit different and you can feel the excitement.'
On United's side, Europa League final opponents Tottenham Hotspur have suffered another injury blow, with midfielder Dejan Kulusevski ruled out of the Reds with surgery on a knee injury. Kulu suffered a first-half injury in Tottenham's 2-0 defeat to Crystal Palace and was diagnosed with a right kneecap injury and underwent surgery on Wednesday. The Sweden international has scored 10 goals and provided 11 assists in 50 appearances this season, including two against Manchester United. His absence from the competition is a major blow to Tottenham and a boon to Manchester United.
Ange Postecoglou faces more serious injury problems than Manchester United, particularly in midfield, with key James Maddison also out for the season with a knee injury, and Lucas Bergwal, who like Kulu, sprained an ankle ligament against Crystal Palace and could end the season early. However, South Korean winger Son Heung-min has returned from injury.
