After Manchester United's 4-3 defeat to Brentford, it was revealed that they were interested in £60 million for their opponent's top scorer Brian Mbeumo. The French-born Cameroonian striker didn't score but broke through the Red Devils' defence and provided an assist. Sir Jim Ratcliffe's INEOS team could sign both him and Cunha, both of whom are well-rounded strikers with wide play.
According to the British "Daily Telegraph", Manchester United has joined the race for the "Queen Bee" Mbeumo, the fierce player wearing the number 19 shirt this season, with 18 goals and 7 assists in the Premier League, second only to four players, they are Liverpool's Salah, Manchester City's Erling Haaland, Newcastle United's Isak and Nottingham Forest's Chris Wood.
Brentford, who signed him for just £5.8 million in 2019, are now available for a 10x transfer fee. Left-footed Mbeumo plays mainly as a right winger, but can also play as a central striker, and after the departure of Ivan Toney, he has played as a central pivot for the "Little Bees" in many games. The 25-year-old is also a target of interest for Liverpool and Newcastle.
Mbeumo has only one year left on his contract, but Brentford still have a first-chance option to extend his contract. Boss Thomas Frank has admitted that Mbeumo could leave this summer but will not be sold cheaply, with their asking price of £60 million.
"I'm the manager and I want my best players to stay forever." Frank told Sky Sports UK, "I know Bryan [Mbeumo] is happy at Brentford, he's thriving, he's doing well and playing great. What does the future hold? I do not know. I've said it many times: we're a club that sells people. But at the same time, we have to stress that there are probably only 10 clubs in the world that don't sell for a living."
United are said not to see Mbeumo as a backup plan for Cunha and the two could be signed together, but before that the club must first secure the sale of Marcus Rashford, Antony and Jadon Sancho. Among them, 25-year-old Brazilian winger Antony, who is on loan to Real Betis in La Liga, is the most likely one of the Red Devils to earn more transfer fees.
His stoppage-time winner for Betis on Sunday was the seventh since the Reds' €100 million-dollar winger on loan, as they continue to qualify for next season's Champions League. They are currently in sixth place, just one point behind Villarreal and four behind Athletic Bilbao with four games left in the league.
Under the Premier League's PSR profitability and sustainability rules, the £32.52 million fee for the sale of Antony would have avoided a loss in this summer's financial report. If Antony, Rashford and Jadon Sancho could be sold, United could theoretically earn £100 million, which would help Amorim buy him.
While United could still salvage the season by winning the Europa League and qualifying for next season's Champions League, Amorim has made it clear that his current squad is not ready to play on both fronts. 'We're not ready to play in the Premier League and the Champions League, but we need to win it, we need it, give the fans something back, and then we have time to get the team ready for those two games.'
Manchester United are particularly in need of reinforcements up front, and the signing of both Cunha and Mbeumo could add more explosions to the attack. Amorim also needs an authentic centre-forward, with Ipswich's Liam Cunha being the top pick. Signing these three players at the same time will require around £150 million in funds.
