Why is Aston Villa still signing Garnacho despite his poor performance at Chelsea?

Alejandro Garnacho has made a permanent move from Chelsea to Aston Villa, with the transfer fee reportedly around £43 million, closing a disappointing chapter at Stamford Bridge.

Just one year after being expected to become a key part of Chelsea's attack, the Argentine international has to find a new home following a disappointing display. However, manager Unai Emery still believes the 22-year-old has plenty of untapped potential, especially in chance creation, which was a rare bright spot in the past season.

Statistics show that Garnacho had a difficult 2025-26 season. After 24 Premier League appearances, he managed only one goal and four assists, a disappointing return for a winger worth tens of millions. This is a clear step back from his final season at Manchester United, where he scored seven goals and provided three assists under Ruben Amorim.

With the coaching staff's trust gone, it was no surprise that Xabi Alonso decided to put him on the transfer list after taking over Chelsea.

However, amidst the gloom, there is one statistic that offers hope for Aston Villa: Garnacho's expected assists (xA). Although his actual assists were low, his xA rose slightly to 3.7, higher than his previous season at Manchester United. This suggests that Garnacho was still creating quality chances for his teammates, but Chelsea's forwards failed to convert them.

This factor is believed to have convinced Unai Emery. Aston Villa have a reliable finisher in Ollie Watkins, and the Spanish manager trusts that Garnacho's crosses will be more effective in the Villa Park system. He was criticized for a social media post that was seen as mocking Ruben Amorim, and during his time at Manchester United and Chelsea, some fans suspected him of leaking the starting lineup before matches.

Nevertheless, Emery is known for his ability to revive players who seemed to have stalled. At Aston Villa, he transformed Morgan Rogers from a £15 million signing into one of the most expensive players in England before his move to Chelsea for £117 million. That success has led Villa's board to believe that Garnacho could be the next project.
