The recruitment of Morgan Rogers from Aston Villa, costing £117 million, poses a significant dilemma: Will this high-priced newcomer vie for a starting role with Cole Palmer or form a tandem with him in Chelsea's frontline for the upcoming campaign?
1. It was Chelsea, not Arsenal, that secured Rogers' signature. The 23-year-old midfielder returned after the 2026 World Cup with 340 minutes played and one assist in a 2-1 loss to Argentina in the semifinals. That was enough for Chelsea to break their club transfer record to land the target that Arsenal had pursued for years.
The signing of Rogers is a powerful declaration of Chelsea's ambition in their first season under Xabi Alonso. Despite missing out on Champions League football, the Stamford Bridge side still possessed enough appeal to convince top targets. However, this also brings a considerable challenge in terms of squad management.
Chelsea already had a host of quality attacking players such as Cole Palmer, Estevao, Pedro Neto, Jamie Gittens, and Geovany Quenda. Rogers' arrival intensifies the competition. With such a massive transfer fee, many are questioning whether Palmer's role will be affected.
Nevertheless, Alonso seems to view the issue more simply. He is known as a tactically flexible coach, having succeeded with both a three-man defense at Leverkusen and a four-man backline at Real Madrid. Alonso's assertion that Palmer is irreplaceable indicates that Rogers will not take the English star's spot. Instead, the ability of both players to excel in multiple positions will make Chelsea more unpredictable. The frequent positional interchanges between Rogers and Palmer promise to surprise Premier League defenses.

Rogers can definitely play alongside Palmer at Chelsea, as both are versatile forwards.
2. Alonso has at least three options to deploy Rogers and Palmer together in the starting eleven.
The most probable scenario is Rogers playing on the left wing, while Palmer continues as the number 10. Chelsea have yet to find a consistent left winger, as both Alejandro Garnacho and Jamie Gittens have disappointed. Meanwhile, Rogers has played 106 matches in this position, scoring 29 goals and providing 14 assists. Last season alone, 45% of his minutes for Aston Villa came from the left flank. His strength, technique, and right-footed finishing make him a formidable threat from that side.
Another option is to pair Rogers with Palmer in a two-number-10 system. This role allows the 23-year-old to exploit his long-range shooting ability, as evidenced by his three goals from outside the box last season. Operating more centrally also enables Rogers to use his close ball control and penetrating runs through the opposition's defense.
Additionally, Rogers can fully take on the right-wing position. Thomas Tuchel used him in this role during the World Cup semifinal against Argentina. It was his cross from the right that set up Anthony Gordon's opening goal for England. At Chelsea, this position is also not yet stable. Estevao needs more time to regain form after a hamstring injury that kept him out of the World Cup, while Pedro Neto still lacks consistency and often misses chances. Therefore, Rogers will provide another creative option, especially against defenses that sit deep.
Under Todd Boehly's era, Chelsea's contracts exceeding the £100 million mark have all been paying off, notably the midfield duo Enzo Fernandez and Moises Caicedo. Now, fans hope that Morgan Rogers will become the next successful "hundred-million" deal for the Stamford Bridge club.
