HERE WE GO! Europe's Red Devils welcome a new head coach

The Belgian team is about to embark on a fresh chapter after finalizing a deal to name Mark van Bommel as head coach through 2028, succeeding Rudi Garcia as they target EURO 2028 glory.

The Belgian national team is preparing to turn over a new leaf as Mark van Bommel has agreed to become the head coach, taking over from Rudi Garcia. According to confirmation from transfer expert Fabrizio Romano, using his signature phrase "Here we go!", all terms have been settled, and the Dutch tactician will sign a contract running until June 2028.

This information was also previously disclosed by journalist Pieter-Jan Calcoen. The two sides are only finalizing the last formalities before the Belgian Football Federation officially announces the new manager.

Van Bommel will take over the team after head coach Rudi Garcia decided to part ways with the "Red Devils" immediately after the 2026 World Cup. Although he could not lead Belgium beyond the quarter-finals, losing to eventual champions Spain, Garcia left a positive impression. Notably, Belgium was the only team to score against Spain throughout the champions' tournament run.

Van Bommel's arrival is seen as a key step in the plan to rejuvenate and rebuild the Belgian team ahead of EURO 2028. The former legendary midfielder, who once captained the Netherlands, has coaching experience at several clubs, including PSV Eindhoven, Wolfsburg, and especially Royal Antwerp.

Van Bommel's greatest success came in the 2022/23 season when he led Royal Antwerp to a historic double, winning the Belgian Pro League and the Belgian Cup. His ability to build an energetic style of play along with a strong fighting spirit is what led the Belgian Football Federation to place high expectations on the 49-year-old coach.

However, Van Bommel also faces considerable challenges. In his previous stints at PSV and Wolfsburg, his teams often started impressively but lacked consistency during the decisive phases of the season. This will be a problem he needs to solve if he wants to bring the new generation of Belgian football talent back to the status of title contenders at major tournaments.

With a contract extending until 2028, Mark van Bommel will have nearly two years to build his squad, refine the playing style, and aim to lead Belgium to conquer the EURO after years of falling short of major honors.
