Manchester United are undergoing a major purge this summer, and one of the players confirmed to leave is 30-year-old Swedish centre-back Victor Lindelof. He missed a penalty in the FA Cup tie between Manchester United and Fulham, but that didn't stop him from finding a home, with the Iceman likely to return to his former club Benfica in the Portuguese Super League.
Victor Lindelof is in the final year of his contract with Manchester United and has been hampered by injuries this season and has yet to start in the Premier League. Given his whopping £120,000-a-week salary, it is unlikely that the club will renew his contract. Portuguese newspaper Record reports that Victor Lindelof intends to return to his former club Benfica when his contract expires in the summer.
Tonio Lindelof moved from Benfica to Manchester United in the summer of 2017 for £30 million, and has made 270 appearances and scored four goals in eight years under six spells for Jose Mourinho, Ole Gunnar Solskjaer, Rangnick, Ten Hag, Ruud van Nistelrooy and now Amorim. Mourinho's introduction of Victor Lindelof is already the second most senior player at Manchester United, second only to Luke Shaw introduced by Louis van Gaal.
With groin, toe and hamstring injuries, Lindelof has had little impact over the past season and a half, having missed 37 games since the start of last season. Amorim, who has publicly stated that he will carry out a purge without mercy, has given the go-ahead for his departure, and it is worth mentioning that the two have played together as team-mates at Benfica.
United activated the one-year first refusal clause in Lindelof's contract last year and had intended to sell him last summer to make money. Unexpectedly, Ten Hag arranged for him to return in the warm-up game, and was injured and absent against Liverpool, which directly led to the inability of the transfer to operate. In the winter window, no one will pay for Lindelof, whose contract is about to expire, and the club can only accept the fact that he will stay at the club until his contract expires. Christian Eriksen, Tom Heaton and Evans are all in the final months of their contracts and could leave in June, as is Victor Lindelof.
Lindelof joined Benfica at a young age and spent five years with the club, winning three Portuguese Super League titles and two Portuguese Cups. It has been reported that during his time at Manchester United, he often returned to Lisbon to visit acquaintances.
Benfica are currently playing in central defence with former Manchester City defenders Nicolas Otamendi and Antonio Silva, but the 37-year-old is set to return to River Plate on a free transfer. Benfica are accustomed to buying back veterans, and another former Manchester United player, Angel Di Maria, is one of them.
If back at Benfica, Lindelof will also meet former Manchester United team-mate Álvaro Fernandez Carreras. The 21-year-old Spanish left-back, who joined the Red Eagles on loan-to-buy basis last year, has never featured for United's first team but is no stranger to Victor Lindelof in training. Manchester United only received €6 million from the sale of A fees, as well as a €3 million floating bonus. Manchester United, meanwhile, have the €20 million buyback right before the 2026 summer window.
However, Amorim opted to bring in Patrick Dolgu in the winter window rather than buy back A fee. Meanwhile, the Manchester United veteran, who switched to his mother's surname Carreras after the transfer, has made the most appearances for Benfica this season, with 38 appearances and 36 starts. Fee said that he is not considering returning to his old club Manchester United or Real Madrid, and is currently focused on the Portuguese Super League title and the Champions League against Barcelona.
"I concentrate on what I have to do because there is a race every three days. There are always other teams interested in me, everyone wants to grow, but I've done a good job here at Benfica." "Manchester United have a buy-back clause but I'm happy here. Real madrid? To be honest, we never know the future, but I have a long-term contract at Benfica and I'm happy. They gave me the opportunity to develop and I owe them everything."
