Timor Leste: A Tough Opponent for Vietnam's National Team

Vietnam's team kicks off their ASEAN Cup 2026 championship defense by facing Timor Leste. Although theoretically the weakest in Group A, recent developments indicate Timor Leste is no longer a pushover.

Timor Leste was the last team to qualify for the ASEAN Cup 2026 finals after beating Brunei in the playoffs. The red-shirted side won 3-0 in the first leg at a neutral venue in Malaysia, then completed the job in the second leg to enter Group A alongside Vietnam, Indonesia, Singapore, and Cambodia. Having to play through qualifying gave Timor Leste extra time to build their squad and gain match fitness before the tournament.

After finalizing their squad for the ASEAN Cup 2026, Timor Leste's coaching staff continued their training camp with a focus on improving defense and counter-attacking organization. The registered squad includes up to 26 players as per tournament rules, retaining the core that played in the playoffs and recent international competitions.

Notably, many Timor Leste players currently play in Indonesia or regularly feature in Southeast Asian leagues. This gives them a good understanding of ASEAN football and helps them adapt to weather conditions and match intensity. Facing defending champions Vietnam, Timor Leste's realistic goal is to maintain a tight defense, limit goals conceded in the first half, and wait for opportunities from counter-attacks or set pieces.

Timor Leste's most notable star remains winger Paulo Gali Freitas. The player currently active in Indonesia possesses speed, technique, and the ability to create surprises in counter-attacking situations.

Alongside Gali Freitas, Timor Leste's attack also relies on João Pedro, one of the team's most experienced strikers who has scored many times in regional competitions. These are two names Vietnam's defense must watch closely to avoid surprises during transition plays.
