In the World Cup third-place match that ended on July 19 Beijing time, France lost 4-6 to England and finished fourth. French manager Deschamps could not cap his 14-year national team coaching career with a victory. After the game, the 57-year-old coach was overcome with emotion during an interview, his eyes welling up with tears.

Reflecting on the 4-6 defeat, Deschamps said: "We played a terrible first half. In the second half, we responded and played our game. We had two chances to make it 4-4, committing more men forward. That was what we should have done, but we didn't."

Deschamps once again took the blame for this match and the previous semifinal loss: "It's my fault because I didn't make the right arrangements in the first half. This defeat is painful, but it does reflect some issues. Finishing third would have been better. We came here with great ambition and accomplished many positive things. We underperformed against Spain; they were truly excellent. But not everything should be dismissed. This is a team with football talent and a foundation for good results. On a human level, it's been a beautiful journey. Eight weeks, very beautiful."

Finally, Deschamps bid an emotional farewell: "From a competitive standpoint, there is disappointment. We had the chance to create emotional resonance for thousands of French fans. I have always tried to keep the French team at the highest level. There is nothing more beautiful than that. I have worn this jersey (the France national team jersey) for 25 years, and that in itself is a beautiful thing."

Indeed, although Deschamps' tenure with the French team ended in a somewhat regrettable manner, it cannot erase the success he achieved over 14 years. During that time, he helped France win one World Cup title, one World Cup runner-up, and one European Championship runner-up.

He has won the World Cup as both a player and a head coach, a feat achieved by only three people in history. He also holds the records for the most matches coached (27), most wins (20), and most goals scored by his team (60) in World Cup history.
