Sharing with Infobae on July 17, coach Claudio Úbeda – who previously coached Lautaro Martínez at Racing Club's reserve team and the Argentina U20 squad – stated that the harsh training environment is what forged the characteristic resilience and fighting spirit of Argentine players.
According to Úbeda, football academies in Argentina not only teach technical and tactical skills but also cultivate willpower, competitive personality, and adaptability – qualities that help players quickly establish themselves in top European leagues. This coach emphasized that the task of those in player development is not merely to teach skills but also to identify and nurture each player's unique traits, even adjusting their playing positions to best suit their abilities. It is this philosophy that has enabled Argentine football to maintain a steady supply of quality players for the national team over decades.
Speaking of Lautaro Martínez, Coach Úbeda recalled that as early as age 17-18 in Racing Club's reserve team, the striker displayed exceptional qualities. After just a few training sessions, Lautaro impressed with his technique, game intelligence, and overwhelming desire to win. He particularly remembered a match between Racing Club's reserves and Unión de Santa Fe in 2016, when Lautaro stole the ball and unleashed a shot from over 45 meters, scoring from near midfield. This stunning goal immediately caught the attention of Atletico Madrid scouts, showing that his talent was already being monitored by European clubs at an early stage.
According to Coach Úbeda, what propelled Lautaro to the next level was not only his natural gift but also his drive for improvement. The striker always trained at maximum intensity, set goals to become the best player, and quickly earned a spot in Racing Club's first team before moving to Inter Milan in 2018. Now at age 28, Lautaro is not only the captain of Inter Milan but also one of the leaders of the Argentine national team.
Coach Úbeda also highly praised the role of strategist Lionel Scaloni in maintaining the success of "La Albiceleste." According to him, Scaloni builds a team through closeness, listening, and persuading players rather than imposing his will, thus creating a united and highly competitive squad.
Beyond professional factors, Coach Úbeda believes that family is a crucial support system that helps young players overcome pressure, financial difficulties, and intense competition during their development.
After winning the 2022 World Cup, the 2021 and 2024 Copa América, Argentina has now reached the 2026 World Cup final. According to Coach Claudio Úbeda, this success is not the result of a single exceptional generation, but rather the fruit of a youth development model that Argentine football has persistently built and refined over many decades.
