Spain defeated France convincingly 2-0 in the semi-final to book their place in this year's World Cup final. Meanwhile, Argentina once again showed their comeback spirit by beating England 2-1 in a dramatic semi-final that followed.

The two teams missed their rendezvous when the Intercontinental Super Cup between the EURO and Copa America champions was canceled. However, fate has brought them to an even bigger and more important match: the 2026 World Cup final. This is the first time a World Cup final features the champions representing the two strongest regions in world football.

The 2026 World Cup final between Argentina and Spain will go down in history with an unprecedented milestone: for the first time, the European champion and the South American champion will compete for the world championship trophy.

Spain are the current European champions after winning EURO 2024 in Germany. Meanwhile, Argentina are the South American champions after successfully defending their Copa America title in 2024. Both teams entering the World Cup final as reigning continental champions is something that has never happened in the previous 22 editions.

These two teams represent two contrasting footballing philosophies. Spain are more comprehensive in controlling the game, while Argentina possess exceptional individual talent and an inexplicable fighting spirit. As top global teams and perennial World Cup contenders, this is the first time Argentina and Spain have faced each other in a final of the world's greatest football festival.

The clash between the two sides could have happened earlier in the Finalissima, the match for the EURO and Copa America champions on March 27 in Qatar, the venue for the 2022 World Cup final, but it was canceled due to security instability in the region, making it the first edition without a champion. Spain and Argentina also missed the chance to add this title to their trophy cabinets.

But as fate would have it, just four months after that failed meeting, Spain and Argentina meet again on the biggest stage of all: the World Cup final. This is truly a grand conclusion to the unfinished Finalissima.

With the reigning World Cup champion, Copa America champion, and EURO champion all competing, the winner of this match will almost certainly be the absolute champion of world football.

The journeys to the final of Spain and Argentina are quite contrasting. Spain had a lackluster opening match, being held to a 0-0 draw by debutants Cabo Verde. However, La Roja then woke up with a streak of six consecutive wins to reach the final. In all four knockout matches, Spain won their opponents in regular time.

Meanwhile, Argentina's path to the final was extremely arduous. Especially in the knockout stage, Messi and his teammates repeatedly found themselves in situations requiring comebacks, including two matches that went to extra time against supposedly weaker opponents: Cabo Verde (round of 32) and Switzerland (quarter-finals). But through those games, the reigning champions Argentina showed the best fighting spirit in this World Cup.

If Spain defeats Argentina in this World Cup final, it will mirror the scenario that Germany accomplished 12 years ago on Brazilian soil.

In that World Cup, also held in the Americas, Germany advanced through the group stage with two wins and one draw. The "Panzer" then won four consecutive knockout matches to claim the world title, earning the admiration of football fans. Notably, on their path to glory, the German players defeated Ronaldo's Portugal, France, and finally Argentina in the final.

At the 2026 World Cup, the "Bull" also had a similar journey. Coach Luis de la Fuente's team also finished the group stage with 7 points, from two wins and one draw. Notably, on their way to the final, Spain also defeated strong contenders: Portugal (still featuring Ronaldo) in the round of 16 and France in the semi-finals. The only remaining mountain for the European champions Spain is the Copa America champions led by superstar Lionel Messi in the final.

For Argentina, 12 years ago at the World Cup, Messi and his teammates cried after losing to a Germany team at the peak of their form, delivering an unforgettable performance. Now, Messi's Argentina faces another European representative that is also having an impressive tournament. The biggest difference is that Messi and his teammates enter this match as defending champions, with a golden opportunity to become the third team to win consecutive World Cups, after Italy (1934, 1938) and Brazil (1958, 1962).

The final is also highly anticipated for the clash of the two teams' stars: Lionel Messi and Lamine Yamal. This is truly a battle of two generations of talent.

Facing Spain will be a special match for Messi, as his life and football career are closely tied to the land of bullfighting.

Messi came to Spain at age 13 to join FC Barcelona, later rising through the La Masia academy. There, the Argentine superstar forged deep ties with both the city of Barcelona and the club. At one point, it was even believed that he could have played for the Spanish national team instead of Argentina.

Now, more than a quarter century since he first set foot in Catalonia, Messi is aiming for his second World Cup title as captain and leader of Argentina, with Spain being the final obstacle on that journey. The match could also be Messi's farewell to international football, making it even more captivating.

The final match between Spain and Argentina will take place at MetLife Stadium (USA) at 2:00 AM on July 20.

In the past, the two teams have met 14 times, most recently when Spain beat Argentina 6-1 in a friendly in March 2018. In the World Cup, they have only faced each other once. Argentina defeated Spain 2-1 in the group stage to advance at the 1966 tournament.
