Spain's €50 million left-back makes bold statement: if they win the World Cup, he'll retire from the national team the next day; he's only been dribbled past twice this tournament.

The much-anticipated World Cup final is set to kick off. On the night of July 17 Beijing time, Cucurella, the €50 million Spanish left-back, stunned reporters by stating that a World Cup victory would prompt him to retire from the Spanish national team on the spot.

Cucurella said: "If I win the World Cup, I'll call Luis (de la Fuente) the next day and tell him not to count on me anymore—I'm retiring from the national team. I think with a European Championship and a World Cup in my pocket, there's nothing left to chase in life."

The host responded: "Marc, we still have 90 minutes to go, but I hope you're joking." Although Cucurella's words carried a joking tone, if he actually wins both the European Championship and the World Cup at age 27 as a starter, there really isn't much more to aim for.

This World Cup, Cucurella's performances have been remarkable. In Spain's last five matches, no opposing player has successfully dribbled past him.

Throughout the entire tournament, Cucurella has been beaten only twice—once by a Cape Verdean player and once by a Saudi player.

Especially in the recent World Cup semi-final against France. After receiving a yellow card in the 30th minute, Cucurella held his nerve throughout, winning his one-on-one duels against Olise and Dembélé, completely neutralizing both of them.

Notably, in the final, Cucurella will be up against Argentina captain Lionel Messi. Whether this new Real Madrid signing can contain Messi's influence will undoubtedly be key to Spain's chances of winning the title.
