World Cup 2026: When home advantage is not enough to keep the dream alive

Home advantage, passionate support from the fans, and the desire to carve out a historic journey ultimately proved insufficient for them to continue their dream at the world's biggest football festival.

Canada were the first to say goodbye after a 0-3 loss to Morocco. The scoreline looks heavy, but the match was not entirely one-sided for most of the game. The North American side tried to stay compact and resilient, holding on until they collapsed after the first goal. When the game forced them to open up, they could no longer withstand the pressure from a faster and sharper opponent.

Mexico also had a sorrowful night at the Azteca Stadium. The blue-shirted team played with great effort against England, causing their opponents considerable difficulty with their fighting spirit and characteristic intensity. However, on a stage as unforgiving as the World Cup, spirit alone is not enough. Defensive errors and a lack of concentration at decisive moments cost Mexico dearly, thus dashing their dream of a deep run on home soil.

Perhaps the most painful was the defeat of the US team. Against Belgium, the "Stars and Stripes" entered the match with high hopes, especially after striker Folarin Balogun had his suspension lifted in time to play. But in the end, the host suffered a heavy 1-4 loss in a game that revealed a host of their issues.

The US brought to the 2026 World Cup a squad full of energy, ambition, and plenty of explosive moments. However, against a seasoned and composed opponent like Belgium, their limitations in experience, game management, and defensive solidity became evident. After equalizing to make it 1-1, the US could not maintain control and quickly collapsed, conceding three more goals. That clearly demonstrated that at the World Cup, determination and inspiration are not enough; to go far, a team also needs composure, tactical discipline, and real quality in decisive moments.

It cannot be denied that the US team faced additional pressure from non-sporting factors. Balogun's return to action after his suspension, amid reports of high-level interference, sparked intense public controversy. Instead of providing a morale boost, that story inadvertently pushed the team into a spiral of pressure just before a big match. Balogun, the top hope in attack, was virtually invisible against Belgium, leaving fans deeply disappointed.

The fact that all three host nations were eliminated in the round of 16 not only ended the World Cup dream of the CONCACAF region but also revealed the limits of North American representatives when facing top-tier teams. Canada and Mexico fought mainly on spirit, while the US had a more talented squad and a more energetic style, but all three lacked the ruthlessness, class, and consistency to overcome the biggest challenges.

Nevertheless, the journeys of the US, Mexico, and Canada were not entirely a failure. These teams still left behind many emotional moments, ignited pride in their fans, and helped create an electrifying atmosphere for the first World Cup co-hosted by three nations. North America delivered a vibrant, distinctive, and culturally rich summer of football. However, on the professional side, home advantage ultimately proved insufficient to turn dreams into reality.
