Manchester United officially announced Onana's departure, negotiating to sign a free agent as his replacement. The renewed 'homegrown' contract will continue as backup.

Manchester United officially announced on Friday that 30-year-old goalkeeper Andre Onana has been loaned once more to Turkish Super Lig outfit Trabzonspor, with the loan deal running through to the conclusion of the 2026/27 season. While no buy option is included, Trabzonspor will assume most of Onana's salary over the loan term and pay a €1.5 million (£1.3 million) loan fee. The deal also features a range of sensible add-on clauses.

Last season, Onana was already on loan at Trabzonspor, making 40 appearances and helping the team win the Turkish Cup while finishing third in the league to qualify for the Europa League. He was originally scheduled to return to Manchester United's pre-season training in July, but Carrick made it clear to him that he had no chance of reclaiming the number one goalkeeper position from Sena Ramence.

In their official statement, Manchester United briefly detailed Onana's situation and wished him well. "Andre (Onana) will join Trabzonspor on loan for the 2026/27 season, subject to receiving the necessary international clearance and completing registration," the statement read. "Everyone at Manchester United wishes Andre all the best in his upcoming matches."

Alongside announcing Onana's departure, United also confirmed that youth academy graduate Dermot Mee has signed a two-year contract extension. His original deal was due to expire this summer, but United opted to keep him. Born in Birmingham, Mee joined United's youth system from Walsall at age 11 and holds Premier League 'homegrown' status. He has been loaned out multiple times but has remained with the first team in recent years, serving in a training role similar to that of 40-year-old veteran Tom Heaton.

British media revealed that when Dermot Mee was first promoted to the first team, he challenged Bruno Fernandes: if he could save two out of five shots from the Portuguese midfielder, he would receive a BFR-signed jersey as a reward. He failed to achieve that, but still got the desired jersey from Fernandes. Since then, the two have developed a close relationship.

Although Dermot Mee has very limited playing time, he is reportedly well-liked by Ramence and Altay Bayindir. In the squad, his role as a training goalkeeper is considered crucial to the development of the primary goalkeepers.

Dermot Mee has represented Northern Ireland at the youth level. Now 23 years old, he not only serves as the first team's training goalkeeper but also plays as an overage player for United's U21 side in various competitions.

It is highly unlikely that United's first team will use Dermot Mee. Once the other two goalkeepers—Bayindir and Radek Vitek—depart, the club will sign a new number two goalkeeper to serve as Ramence's backup. British media reports that the club has already held talks with 35-year-old Welsh goalkeeper Karl Darlow about a free transfer.

Darlow's contract with Leeds United has expired, making him a free agent. Last season, he outshone €16 million newcomer Lucas Perry, making 22 Premier League appearances for Leeds with five clean sheets, helping the team finish 14th to avoid relegation.

Leeds had hoped to extend his contract but failed to reach an agreement. Another Leeds goalkeeper, Melier, whose contract also expired, is interested in joining Arsenal. As a result, Leeds is now scouting Japanese international goalkeeper Zion Suzuki.

Now that his contract has expired, Darlow can sign with any club. The Daily Mail reports that David Moyes' Everton also intends to bring him in to compete with England international Jordan Pickford. Additionally, before signing Martin Dubravka, Tottenham had also approached Darlow.

Darlow has other Premier League options, though playing time is not guaranteed. If he joins Manchester United, he would certainly start in domestic cup competitions—the League Cup and FA Cup—while Ramence would handle Premier League and Champions League matches.
