In this World Cup, the Swiss team can be described as starting slow but improving over time. They were held to a surprising 1-1 draw by Qatar in their opening group match. However, after that, the team gradually found its form, defeating Bosnia and Herzegovina 4-1 and Canada 2-1 to finish top of Group B and advance smoothly.

In the Round of 16, facing Algeria, the third-place team from Group J, Switzerland took the lead just 10 minutes into the match. The in-form Red Star player Manzambi assisted Embolo to break the deadlock. Early in the second half, Ndoye sealed the victory for Switzerland with a long-range shot.

With this victory, Switzerland finally broke an 88-year curse.Previously, they had suffered seven consecutive losses in World Cup knockout matches, a streak only surpassed by Mexico’s eight-match losing streak. The last time Switzerland won a knockout match was back in the 1938 World Cup Round of 16 replay, where they eliminated Germany. Now, 88 years later, they have finally secured a long-awaited knockout stage victory.

Next, Switzerland will aim to break another curse: reaching the World Cup quarterfinals for the first time in 72 years. The last time Switzerland made it to the World Cup quarterfinals was in 1954, when they hosted the tournament. Since then, they have participated five times but were eliminated in the Round of 16 each time, including the last three World Cups where they were knocked out after advancing from the group stage.

This time, Switzerland will face the winner of the match between Colombia and Ghana in the Round of 16. Avoiding the superpower teams, this represents an excellent opportunity for Switzerland to break their curse.
