During their pre-ASEAN Cup 2026 training stint in South Korea, Vietnam's national squad will face Gangwon FC, the club where Lương Xuân Trường once played.
Vietnam's national team will have the chance to play against Gangwon FC, the former club of midfielder Lương Xuân Trường, during their training camp in South Korea in preparation for the 2026 ASEAN Cup. This match is also considered the most professionally challenging among the three tests for coach Kim Sang Sik's team before returning home.
According to the plan announced by the Vietnam Football Federation (VFF), the Vietnamese national team will play three friendly matches in South Korea from July 2 to 14. Specifically, coach Kim Sang Sik's squad will face Siheung FC (K.League 3) on July 5, Yongin FC (K.League 2) on July 8, and conclude the training camp with a match against Gangwon FC (K.League 1) on July 13.
Among the three opponents, Gangwon FC is regarded as the biggest test. The K.League 1 side has been impressive in the 2026 season, sitting near the top of the standings and boasting a squad valued at nearly €10 million. With high technical quality and a fast-paced style of play, Gangwon promises to provide a crucial examination for Vietnam ahead of the ASEAN Cup.
Gangwon FC also evokes many memories for Vietnamese football fans, as it was the club Lương Xuân Trường played for in 2017. Although he did not get many opportunities to play in the K.League, his time in South Korea is still considered a memorable milestone in the career of the midfielder who came through the HAGL academy, and it also opened the door for many Vietnamese players to go abroad later.
For coach Kim Sang Sik, the training camp in his home country not only helps players improve their physical foundation but also provides an opportunity to refine their playing style and test the squad. The three friendlies against clubs from three different levels of Korean football will allow the coaching staff to comprehensively assess adaptability and choose the optimal lineup for the upcoming tournament.
Notably, the attack of the Vietnamese national team is expected to be the focal point in the matches in South Korea, featuring Nguyễn Xuân Sơn, Đỗ Hoàng Hen, and Nguyễn Tài Lộc. These test matches against quality opponents like Gangwon FC will serve as an important basis for coach Kim Sang Sik to refine his tactics, before embarking on the journey to defend the ASEAN Cup 2026 title with the Vietnamese team.
