World Cup 2026: Goalkeeper Manuel Neuer announces retirement from German national team

Neuer stated: "Playing for Germany has always been an honor! Being eliminated early from the World Cup was a huge shock. Clearly we didn't meet expectations and should have gone further in this tournament. This ending is heartbreaking!"

The 2014 World Cup winner then explained why, after initially announcing his retirement following the 2024 European Championship on home soil, he decided to return to the German national team. First, wearing the national team jersey always filled him with immense pride. Second, at the age of 40 and with experience from four World Cups, the goalkeeper wanted to support young players both on and off the pitch in the best possible way and help German football. Although the ending was somewhat bitter, he has no regrets about this decision.

At FC Bayern Munich, the goalkeeper extended his contract for one more year until mid-May 2027.
