England faces Mexico in the 2026 World Cup round of 16, coach Thomas Tuchel highlights a "major disadvantage"

On the eve of the 2026 World Cup round of 16, England boss Thomas Tuchel acknowledged that his side is up against a "huge drawback" before their clash with co-hosts Mexico at the iconic Azteca venue.

The Three Lions recently staged a comeback to defeat DR Congo 2-1 in the round of 32 held in Atlanta on Wednesday, thanks to a late brace from captain Harry Kane. This victory secured England's place in the round of 16, where they will face one of the tournament's co-hosts, Mexico. The match will take place at Estadio Azteca and kicks off at 1:00 AM BST on Monday in England.

The legendary Azteca Stadium in Mexico City has a capacity of 87,523 seats and sits at an altitude of approximately 2,250 meters (7,400 feet) above sea level, which is expected to pose a significant challenge for English players adapting to high-altitude playing conditions.

Mexico boasts an extremely impressive record at this "fortress." In 89 official matches played at Azteca, they have won 70 and lost only two. El Tri's most recent defeat there dates back to September 2013.

The Mexican team, under their coach, is also in excellent form at the 2026 World Cup, having won all four matches played so far, scoring eight goals and conceding none.

All four of Mexico's matches have been played at home, with three taking place at Azteca. Most recently, fueled by passionate home support, Mexico defeated Ecuador 2-0 in the round of 32, with first-half goals from Julian Quiñones and striker Raul Jimenez (Wolverhampton). This was Mexico's first victory in a World Cup knockout round since they hosted the tournament in 1986.

The last time England played at Azteca Stadium was also during the 1986 World Cup. On that occasion, the Three Lions lost 1-2 to Argentina in the quarter-finals after a second-half brace from Diego Maradona, which included the infamous "Hand of God" goal, followed by the legendary solo effort considered one of the greatest goals in World Cup history.

Tuchel believes playing at Azteca is a major disadvantage for England

After the dramatic victory over DR Congo in a covered, air-conditioned stadium in Atlanta (where the roof remained closed throughout the match), Tuchel told BBC Radio 5 Live: "I'm not sure we are ready, because this is a very big disadvantage for England. Mexico has been playing there from the start of the tournament and they are fully adapted to the high-altitude conditions. We don't have enough time to adapt. That's a huge disadvantage, and I'm not sure what other disadvantages we might face."

"I also don't know if the travel will go smoothly, whether the players will sleep well, or if there will be too much noise outside the hotel. But anyway, let's go there, we'll accept the challenge."
