OFFICIAL: A Premier League giant receives a severe penalty from UEFA

Aston Villa faces a significant penalty from UEFA due to violations of financial rules, with Chelsea, Newcastle, and Nottingham Forest also penalized for surpassing squad expenditure thresholds.

UEFA has imposed a hefty fine on Aston Villa for a major breach of squad cost regulations in 2025. The club, which won the 2026 Europa League, has been fined £19.4 million—the second highest penalty ever applied to a European club.

According to the announcement, the majority of Aston Villa's fine, amounting to £12.9 million, will be suspended if the club continues to comply with financial regulations over a three-year period. This timeframe begins from the original penalty issued last July.

This is not the first time Aston Villa has been penalized by UEFA for financial issues. Just one year ago, the Villa Park side was fined £9.5 million for breaching European football governing body's financial rules.

In addition to the monetary penalty, Aston Villa also faces restrictions on registering new players for their upcoming Champions League campaign. UEFA is expected to release further details regarding these restrictions soon.

Apart from Aston Villa, several other Premier League clubs have also been penalized by UEFA for violating squad cost ratio rules, including Chelsea, Nottingham Forest, and Newcastle United. Chelsea was fined £2.6 million, with £1.7 million suspended. Nottingham Forest must pay £2.2 million, while Newcastle United received a £2.6 million penalty.

Newcastle also reached a settlement related to exceeding the football earnings threshold set by UEFA. The northeast England club was fined an additional £8.6 million, with £6 million suspended depending on future compliance.

Meanwhile, Strasbourg, a club under Chelsea's multi-club ownership model BlueCo, has been fined £21.5 million. This is the highest penalty ever imposed on a European club, with £10.3 million suspended. The sanction relates to Strasbourg reporting a squad cost ratio exceeding 70%.

Under UEFA's squad cost ratio regulations, clubs participating in the Champions League, Europa League, or Conference League cannot spend more than 70% of their revenue on players, including wages, transfer fees, and related costs.

Chelsea continues to face financial issues.

In its official statement, UEFA said: “For Aston Villa and Chelsea, both clubs previously sanctioned last season, UEFA's Club Financial Control Body First Chamber reviewed their improving trend in squad cost ratio during the 2024-2025 period, in line with forecasts presented in their settlement agreements.

Consequently, part of the fine is conditional, dependent on the clubs continuing to significantly reduce their squad cost ratio by 2026,” UEFA emphasized.

As for Chelsea, the London club confirmed it has worked proactively and transparently with UEFA. The club stated that UEFA's Club Financial Control Body acknowledged the improving trend in their squad cost ratio in 2025. However, as Chelsea still slightly exceeded the 70% threshold, the club will pay the required fine.
