Manchester United has made it clear that they will not offload 27-year-old English midfielder Mason Mount during the current transfer window. Although there are reports that AC Milan could offer 25 million euros (22 million pounds) for his services, the Red Devils are unable to part with him now because they require adequate personnel for their four-front campaign next season, and Carrick must first guarantee the squad size.

Some reports suggest that Mount has been recommended to AC Milan, as the club has just appointed former Manchester United manager Ruben Amorim, who especially admired Mount during his time at Old Trafford. Mount is well-suited to Amorim's 3-4-3 formation.
Since joining Manchester United from Chelsea for 60 million pounds in the summer of 2023, Mount has experienced inconsistent form and multiple injuries, making only 72 appearances in three years. However, his most stable performances came under Amorim's management.
Nevertheless, Manchester United insists that they are unaware of any transfer developments regarding Mount, as the club does not intend to sell him. It is also reported that Mount has no desire to leave Old Trafford and is currently in Spain undergoing a personal training program with a private coach, preparing to return to the team for preseason training next week.
The first batch of Manchester United players will return to Carrington on July 9 to begin preparations for the new season. By then, Casemiro's contract will have expired, and he will join Inter Miami as a free agent to partner with Lionel Messi. Consequently, United will have to rebuild their midfield this summer.
Due to Uruguayan international Ugarte suffering a torn anterior cruciate ligament in his left knee during the World Cup, Manchester United will face a long period, possibly the entire season, without his services.
Manchester United has reached an agreement with Atalanta to sign Ederson for 39 million pounds and may also bring in one or two more midfield reinforcements. However, even with these additions, Carrick's squad will still not be sufficient.

When Manchester United signed Mount, the fixed transfer fee was 55 million pounds. If they could now sell him for 22 million pounds, it would indeed allow them to balance the books on paper, while also saving his weekly wage of 250,000 pounds, totaling 25 million pounds over the remaining two years of his contract.
However, Mount's ability to play multiple positions in a 4-2-3-1 formation—including the No. 6, No. 8, and No. 10 roles, as well as on the wing—has led Carrick to decide against selling him. Mount can also fill in as a defensive midfielder, a role he took on in two matches at the end of last season.
Academy players will also be considered by Manchester United's coaching staff, with Taylor Fletcher appearing to be the most promising prospect. The 19-year-old Fletcher represented Scotland in the World Cup, but since Scotland were eliminated in the group stage, he will get some opportunities during preseason.
In addition, Manchester United has Toby Collyer in the squad, but the 22-year-old has been plagued by injuries over the past season and may be loaned out again or even sold outright.
The Athletic's Laurie Whitwell believes that Manchester United is unlikely to promote any midfield players from the academy. "They might want to have a look, but I think none of those players are truly ready," he said.
Apart from Mount, Manchester United's right winger Amad Diallo has also been linked with a move to AC Milan. He was another favorite of Amorim's during his time at the Red Devils, being deployed as a right wing-back. However, the 23-year-old Ivorian international is even less likely to be sold by United.

Italian transfer expert Fabrizio Romano said: "Manchester United consider Amad as a non-transferable asset this summer. Although there is indeed interest in the Ivorian winger and inquiries have been made, he will not leave, as Carrick views him as a key player."
