Ajax has formally named Míchel as their new manager on a contract running through 2028. The strategist, who guided Girona to Champions League qualification, is tasked with restoring the luster of the four-time European Cup winner.
Ajax officially announced the appointment of Míchel as their new head coach under a contract that runs until June 2028, marking a key step in the plan to bring the Dutch giants back to the pinnacle of European football.
The Spanish coach, whose full name is Miguel Ángel Sánchez Muñoz, will take over the Ajax bench after a successful stint at Girona. This was a pick that the Amsterdam club's leadership pursued for months, as they sought a manager who aligns with their philosophy of youth development and traditional attacking football.
Míchel began his coaching career at Rayo Vallecano before managing SD Huesca. However, his name truly gained wide recognition during a five-season spell at Girona. Under the 50-year-old strategist's guidance, the Catalan side achieved a fairy-tale finish of third in La Liga in the 2023/24 season, earning their first-ever Champions League berth.
After signing the contract, Míchel did not hide his excitement: “I am very proud to lead Ajax. This is one of Europe's most traditional clubs, famous for developing outstanding young players. Together, we will build a strong team to restore Ajax to its rightful place.”
Technical director Jordi Cruijff also had high praise for the new coach: “Míchel is an ambitious strategist with strong character and a very clear working method. His football philosophy fits Ajax. We believe he will instill a fighting spirit and a new identity in the team.”
The arrival of Míchel is expected to usher in a new chapter for Ajax, the club that has won the Champions League four times and stands as one of the biggest icons of European football. After several disappointing seasons, the Johan Cruyff Arena side is determined to rebuild and quickly return to contention for domestic honors and continental competitions.
With his experience in building modern playing styles and developing young talent, Míchel is seen as a crucial piece in Ajax's journey to reclaim its former glory.
