Determine the final opponent of the Vietnam National Team at the 2026 AFF Cup

The 2026 AFF ASEAN Cup officially kicks off with a preliminary round clash between Brunei and Timor Leste to secure the final berth in the group stage.

The 2026 AFF ASEAN Cup will officially start on June 2nd with the opening match of the preliminary round between Brunei and Timor Leste. Although this is only a showdown between the two lowest‑rated teams in the region, the match carries great significance because the winner will earn the last ticket to the group stage of Southeast Asia's biggest national team tournament.

According to the schedule, the first leg will take place at 7:15 pm on June 2nd at the Hassanal Bolkiah Stadium in Brunei’s capital, Bandar Seri Begawan. One week later, the two teams will meet again in the second leg at the KLFA Stadium in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia. Since Timor Leste does not have a stadium that meets international match standards, the team is forced to choose Malaysia as its home ground for the fight to qualify for the group stage.

Ahead of the contest, Timor Leste is considered the slight favourite thanks to notable progress in football development in recent years. The team has invested heavily in youth training and has enabled many players to gain experience abroad. Meanwhile, Brunei still faces difficulties in improving professional quality and has not made a significant mark in regional tournaments.

Nevertheless, the nature of a knockout match always holds potential surprises. Brunei has the advantage of playing the first leg at home and will surely make the most of the crowd’s support to secure a favourable result. Conversely, Timor Leste understands that it needs to build an advantage before the second leg on neutral ground in Malaysia.

The team that prevails over the two legs will join Group A of the 2026 AFF ASEAN Cup alongside Vietnam, Indonesia, Singapore and Cambodia. This is seen as a very noteworthy group, featuring the reigning Southeast Asian champion alongside several ambitious teams. Meanwhile, Group B consists of Thailand, Malaysia, the Philippines, Myanmar and Laos.

After the preliminary round concludes, the group stage of the 2026 AFF ASEAN Cup will take place from July 24th to August 8th. The top two teams from each group will advance to the semi‑finals, which are played over two legs. The semi‑finals are scheduled for mid‑August, before the two best teams contest the final in two legs on August 22nd and 26th.
