Thailand's coach ends a long-standing tradition in Southeast Asian tournaments.

Jukkapant Punpee asserts that Thailand U19 is fielding its most powerful lineup for the 2026 ASEAN U19 Championship.

Thailand U19 enters the 2026 ASEAN U19 Championship with great determination, following recent disappointing results for Thai football in regional competitions. On the eve of their opening match against Brunei U19 on June 2, Coach Jukkapant Punpee stated that his team would not hold back players or experiment with the squad as in previous years, but would bring the strongest available lineup to Indonesia.

Although considered far superior to Brunei U19, the Thai coach remains cautious. He believes that focus and a serious competitive spirit are the most important factors in pursuing the championship goal. Speaking to the media, Coach Punpee emphasized: "This is the strongest squad currently available for the Thailand U19 age group — 100% of the best players. They have all excelled in training and shown a deep understanding of tactics. Of course there is pressure, but that lies with the coaching staff; the players' role is to give their all, contribute every moment, and enjoy the tournament."

In fact, this is not the first time the strategist has stated that Thailand U19 will compete with an optimal force.More than a week before the final squad was announced, he had already declared he would select the best players. However, this time the assertion carries greater weight, as the tournament squad has been finalized with no significant adjustments remaining.

For many years, Thai football has often applied a policy that local media call "holding back players" in Southeast Asian tournaments. From the ASEAN Cup and SEA Games to youth competitions like the U17 or U23 ASEAN championships, Thailand frequently did not use their strongest squads, prioritizing continental events or longer-term goals. This often led fans to see lineups missing prominent stars.

However, repeated failure to achieve expected results in regional competitions has forced Thai football to change its approach. After recent setbacks in youth tournaments and at the senior national team level, the Football Association of Thailand decided to aim for reclaiming its status by fielding the strongest squad at the 2026 ASEAN U19 Championship. This is seen as a clear sign of the young Thai team's great ambition.

In this year's tournament, Thailand U19 is in Group B alongside Malaysia U19, Singapore U19, and Brunei U19. With a highly rated lineup and the declared commitment to "100% of the strongest squad," Coach Jukkapant Punpee's team shows their determination to compete for the title. The opening match against Brunei U19 will be the first opportunity for this team to prove that they have truly abandoned the "holding back players" policy and are ready to conquer the regional stage with all their strength.
