Arne Slot pens a heartfelt letter after being dismissed by Liverpool

Slot, the ex-manager, affirmed that Liverpool maintains a strong base to remain competitive at the elite level in the years ahead, thanking the supporters for a unique connection that, in his words, "goes beyond the sport itself."

Slot departed Liverpool on Saturday, bringing an end to a turbulent 13-month spell at Anfield. The 47-year-old coach had led the port-city club to a Premier League title in his very first season in charge, before enduring a difficult second year.

In an open letter published in the Liverpool Echo, the Dutch tactician opened up about that special period, recalling the painful loss following Diogo Jota's death last summer, as well as the incident where fans were attacked after the championship parade.

Leaving Anfield with composure and restraint, Slot thanked the supporters, players, club legends, and the board for their companionship over the past two years. He also emphasized that the rebuilding process started last summer had laid an important foundation for Liverpool to keep looking toward the future.

Cựu HLV trưởng Arne Slot khẳng định Liverpool vẫn sở hữu nền tảng vững chắc để tiếp tục cạnh tranh ở đẳng cấp cao nhất trong nhiều năm tới, đồng thời gửi lời cảm ơn sâu sắc tới người hâm mộ vì mối liên kết đặc biệt mà theo ông "đã vượt ra ngoài khuôn khổ bóng đá".

Former head coach Arne Slot insisted Liverpool still has a robust platform to continue challenging at the highest level

"Liverpool's 20th league title is the achievement of all of us and will forever remain a memorable chapter in the club's history. Everyone has the right to be proud of that," Slot wrote.

"Liverpool has always set standards by the biggest trophies, and that is entirely correct. But I also leave with the belief that the club is exactly where it belongs: among the elite of European football. Securing Champions League qualification is a crucial task, as it allows Liverpool to continue competing at the top in the coming season and beyond.

I have full confidence in the road ahead. The players who have given everything for the club, upheld its traditional values, and created countless unforgettable moments have built a sustainable foundation for further growth."

Slot also expressed his faith in Liverpool's next generation: "Alongside that, a new generation is maturing, ready to write their own story and embrace the responsibility of wearing this shirt. Change is always part of football, but I know this club will continue to make its people proud.

On my first day standing under the sign in the Anfield tunnel, I understood what this place demands. And today, I leave with the feeling that we never stopped striving to meet that demand."

Arne Slot stated that he built a solid foundation for Liverpool, enabling the club to stay competitive among the "elite" for many years to come

Slot said last season's Premier League title was "more meaningful than ever" because the fans were finally able to celebrate directly with the team — something they missed out on in 2020 due to the pandemic. However, that joy was quickly overshadowed by a serious incident on Water Street after the trophy parade, which left 134 supporters injured.

"After what was taken from you in 2020, I always understood how important this moment of celebrating together would be," he wrote.

"Seeing hundreds of thousands of people flooding the streets of Liverpool made me feel that even more deeply.

What happened afterward on Water Street was truly shocking, and my thoughts have always been with all those affected. I witnessed firsthand your spirit of unity and compassion. That same spirit helped this city overcome many difficult times before, and I hope it continues to bring the justice and accountability that so many have persistently sought over the years."

Additionally, Slot recalled the biggest shock of his tenure: the sudden passing of Diogo Jota and his younger brother André Silva in a car accident last July.

"Just a few weeks after celebrating together, we lost Diogo — words cannot describe it," Slot said with emotion.

"Above all, I want to remember a teammate, a friend, and a wonderful human being — someone who touched the hearts of thousands of fans every time he wore the Liverpool shirt.

During one of the toughest periods the club has faced, the love, empathy, and support that the Liverpool family showed one another were extraordinary.

As I say goodbye to this club, I will always carry the memory of how you remembered Diogo and stood together for him. That will stay with me forever."
