The 2008 AFF Cup golden generation continue to leave their imprint by thriving in coaching roles within Vietnamese football.
Nearly two decades after their historic triumph at the 2008 AFF Cup,many former Vietnamese national team players are now making an impact in a new role. No longer actively competing on the pitch, those who brought Vietnam its first Southeast Asian championship are gradually proving their capabilities on the coaching bench, contributing to the emergence of a promising young generation of coaches.
The standout figure in the 2025/2026 season is Nguyễn Việt Thắng. The former Vietnam striker has just led Club Trường Tươi Đồng Nai to win the First Division title and secure promotion to V.League a full round before the end of the season. This achievement is particularly notable because just one season earlier, the 1981-born manager had also guided Club Ninh Bình to an unbeaten championship in the same division, creating one of the most impressive campaigns in First Division history.
Behind Việt Thắng's success is the partnership of his former teammate Lê Phước Tứ. The ex-Vietnam central defender currently serves as the technical director at Trường Tươi Đồng Nai and played a key role in the championship journey. Additionally, Nguyễn Quang Hải, who scored the historic goal against Singapore in the 2008 AFF Cup, is also a member of the club's coaching staff, adding a special touch to that golden generation.
Not only Việt Thắng and his former teammates, but also the talented ex-midfielder Nguyễn Minh Phương is demonstrating commendable coaching abilities. This season, he helped Club TP.HCM secure a bronze medal in the First Division one round early. Previously, Minh Phương made headlines by leading Bình Phước to a top finish, showing consistency in coaching across different environments.
In the V.League arena, Phạm Thành Lương has also earned his first title as an assistant coach, helping Club Công an Hà Nội win the championship. Although he faced many challenges during his coaching career, the former midfielder, famous for winning four Vietnamese Golden Balls, continues to learn and accumulate experience to prove himself in professional football.
The fact that many members of the 2008 AFF Cup-winning Vietnam national team are collectively succeeding on the coaching bench reflects the maturation of a special generation. From Việt Thắng, Lê Phước Tứ, Nguyễn Minh Phương to Phạm Thành Lương and Dương Hồng Sơn, they are contributing to a young coaching class rich in experience and ambition. Among them, the 2026-2027 V.League season will mark the first time Việt Thắng and Phước Tứ test themselves at the highest level of Vietnamese football, promising an exciting new chapter for the golden generation of the 2008 AFF Cup.
