A "Love Letter" to the Yue Super League, Watching the Game with "Grandma"

Written by Han Bing When the passionate struggle on the pitch meets the sincere bonds of overseas Chinese remittance letters, the collaboration between the Yue Super League and the Teochew-language film "Love Letter to Grandma" naturally becomes a two-way embrace of local football and local culture. This is a deep integration of sports and culture covering four cities in Chaoshan and extending across Guangdong Province, using football to warm hearts, the green field to showcase loyalty, and the tournament to spread culture, bringing an immersive experience both inside and outside the stadium to every city. Last Sunday evening, the "Grandma Theme Day" during the 5th round of the Yue Super League in Jieyang brought this collaboration to a climax after nearly a month of preparation.

The Yue Super League and "Love Letter to Grandma" achieved a mutual breakthrough across circles. The Chaoshan overseas Chinese remittance letters and dialect culture stepped out of archives and the big screen, taking root in stadiums and among the crowd. This collaboration became a successful model of Lingnan cultural and sports integration, urban empathy, and cultural export. Thus, football and the film together gave the Yue Super League a new label of warmth, loyalty, and culture.

This two-way collaboration between the Yue Super League and the film "Love Letter to Grandma" began on May 2nd during the 2nd round match between Shantou and Qingyuan. The Shantou home ground played the film's trailer for the first time, laying the groundwork for the collaboration. Over nearly a month, the Yue Super League created themed activities to differentiate itself, spreading the culture of overseas Chinese remittance letters, the spirit of loyalty, and the nostalgia of Chaoshan across various cities, continuously building momentum and popularity for the integration of sports and culture.

On May 17th, during the 3rd round match between Dongguan and Shantou, a large screen on the streets of Dongguan displayed the slogan "Send a love letter to Grandma, issue a challenge to Chaoshan," blending warmth and dominance perfectly. Before the match, the home team performed the "Chonghuan Order," followed by a Chaoshan soldier stepping forward to recite a "family letter" in a child's Teochew voice—the warmest welcome for the visiting Shantou team and their fans. That same evening, during the "Chaoshan Derby" between Jieyang and Chaozhou, the film's theme song was played after the match, and Jieyang fans cheered to send off the Chaozhou team, conveying the deep bond of "home folks" in Chaoshan walking together in unity.

On May 23rd, during the 4th round match between Chaozhou and Qingyuan at Chaozhou's home ground, the classic "carrying the banner" scene from the film was recreated before the match. The big screen displayed the iconic line, "Across rivers and seas, with you in my heart, no distance feels too far." At that moment, football and homesickness resonated together, further building the emotional atmosphere for this landmark cultural and sports collaboration.

On May 31st, the "Grandma Theme Day" during the 5th round match in Jieyang brought the collaboration's cross-circle effect to its peak. Jieyang adopted the slogan "Write a love letter to Grandma, dedicate goals to Jieyang," turning the stadium and its surroundings into a film-exclusive home ground. Outside the stadium, a dedicated stall for the film's "Xie's Five-Inch Rice Cake" was set up, distributing 500 portions of authentic Chaoshan rice cakes for free, allowing fans to immerse themselves in the local flavors and nostalgia of Jieyang as depicted in the film. Inside the venue, there was a message wall and classic-line hand-held signs related to the film, deepening fans' emotional connection to the Jieyang team and the movie.

During the opening show inside the stadium, the classic "carrying the banner" scene from the film was recreated: 24 women in cheongsam walked across the green field, reviving the traditional Chaoshan culture from the film. Cheerleaders held hand-held signs with classic lines from the film, cheering for the Jieyang team. Outside, a large screen played exclusive cheering slogans such as "Write a love letter to Grandma, dedicate goals to Jieyang" and "Dare to struggle overseas to win, dare to play football to be a good lad" on a loop.

This is no longer a simple interactive promotion between the Yue Super League and a Teochew-language film; it is a classic case of compound communication.

Just like the film's success, the multi-city collaboration between the Yue Super League and the film has broken through the limitations of traditional sports-cultural integration, achieving a mutual cross-circle resonance with the public. The root cause lies in the fact that both the Yue Super League and the film are grounded in local roots, sincerity, and a tribute to ordinary people, loyalty, perseverance, and heritage.

Before the match between Dongguan and Shantou, not only did a Chaoshan youth deliver a touching Teochew family-letter monologue, but the home team also invited children from migrant worker families in Wanjiang to enter the field with the players. The Yue Super League pays tribute to "laborers," and its spirit of humanistic care mirrors the film's tribute to the Chaoshan ancestors who worked hard and struggled overseas.

Across various Yue Super League venues, tributes were paid in different ways to delivery riders, ordinary workers, and special groups, including public welfare movie screenings organized in various places. All of these were done with sincerity, using the simplest power to break down circle barriers. On the field, 38-year-old veteran Cai Letao, along with old friends Huang Jian and Huang Zetian, have been cultivating Chaoshan local youth football for 12 years. Like the Chaoshan ancestors in the film, they leave their loyalty and perseverance on the green field. In Meizhou, known as the hometown of football, the local Chaoshan Chamber of Commerce organized students from Jiaying University to watch the film, helping young people better understand that football can and should be a carrier of traditional culture.

From the special exhibition of film props at the Guangzhou Overseas Chinese Museum, to the themed exhibitions on overseas Chinese remittance culture at various Chaoshan museums, the immersive experience zones at the Shantou Overseas Chinese Remittance Cultural Center featuring red-head boats, letter writing, and family tradition scenes, as well as the tourism routes in Jieyang and Shantou centered on film scenes under the theme "Mountains and Seas with Love, Experiencing the Hometown of Overseas Chinese," all were intensively launched during the Yue Super League season. The multi-dimensional collaboration among the Yue Super League, the film, and cultural tourism is rooted in sincerity as its foundation, with humanistic values of loyalty, integrity, perseverance, and dedication. As a result, Yue Super League matches are no longer just football games about running and winning; they have become carriers for passing on local culture and凝聚ating urban emotions.

This collaboration successfully expanded the audience of the Yue Super League from traditional male football fans to women, middle-aged and elderly groups, as well as overseas Chinese and young people who have developed a strong interest in traditional culture through the film. In particular, young people, in the relaxed scenarios of watching games, checking in, and interacting, come to understand the weight of "a single overseas Chinese remittance letter, a lifetime of waiting," and grasp the pioneering spirit of ancestors who ventured overseas and their deep attachment to their homeland. This achieves the living inheritance of intangible cultural heritage and the youthful dissemination of local culture. The future of football belongs to young people, and the future of traditional culture also belongs to young people.

The deep integration between the Yue Super League and the film "Love Letter to Grandma" explores a new model of combining amateur leagues, blockbuster films, and local culture. Using Yue Super League stadiums as the offline main stage, it covers match-attending fans, local residents, and out-of-town tourists, breaking through the circles of football, cinema, and cultural tourism. In terms of communication channels, it fully utilizes offline real scenes, real people, real objects, and immersive cultural experiences, forming a three-dimensional communication chain of "offline authenticity plus online discussion." It not only makes full use of existing resources for media innovation but also breaks down barriers between different circles, creating a win-win situation for the Yue Super League, local culture, and cultural tourism.

Seizing the opportunity of the Teochew-language film going viral, the Yue Super League continuously disseminates regional cultures such as Chaoshan overseas Chinese remittance letters, dialects, banner-carrying intangible heritage, and cuisine. With a second exposure through football scenes, local culture is accurately exported. Through multi-city cultural collaborations in Shantou, Chaozhou, Dongguan, and Jieyang, using the Yue Super League as a carrier, it activates the strong willingness of young people in the new era to learn about Chaoshan culture and history, enhancing the recognizability of local culture. This collaboration between the Yue Super League and the film also radiates the unique charm of Guangyue culture across the whole country.

The deep collaboration with "Love Letter to Grandma" enriches the brand connotation of the Yue Super League, forming a local football tournament IP that is cultured, warm, and loyal. Compared to other provincial city leagues, it effectively improves the competitiveness of the tournament IP's differentiation, with the Lingnan regional cultural label becoming one of the core advantages of the Yue Super League. The Yue Super League further sheds its purely competitive nature, becoming a cultural export platform that "tells city stories and passes on cultural roots."

This collaboration allowed the Yue Super League to break through and stand out with its unique cultural differentiation, adding a local humanistic touch and showcasing the warmth, loyalty, heritage, sense of belonging, and patriotism that are uniquely Lingnan. The "football + culture + emotion" brand IP created by the Yue Super League has become a replicable new paradigm for sports-cultural integration. This collaboration proves that the dissemination of Lingnan regional culture can become a public participation and two-way empathy through the Yue Super League stadiums, turning niche intangible heritage into popular culture loved by more young people. Riding the wave of Chaoshan culture's viral spread, the overall tone of the Yue Super League will further shift toward "football + culture + emotion." After Chaoshan, people can fully expect the launch of Cantonese, Hakka, Leizhou, and other cultural-themed match days to break through and gain traction.

The Yue Super League × "Love Letter to Grandma" is a phenomenon of Lingnan cultural revival driven by football. Just like the film, it proves that content that is down-to-earth, more local, and more sincere is more likely to achieve full-circle breakthrough. It not only provides a successful reference for cross-border collaborations between other provincial leagues and local cultural IPs across the country, but also achieves a win-win situation for the Yue Super League's season branding, cultural heritage, and value orientation.
