The outcome of the 2027 AFC U20 Asian Cup qualification draw caught the keen interest of Southeast Asian media, with Vietnam U20 being placed in what is considered a very challenging group featuring Iran, North Korea, and Palestine.
On the afternoon of May 28, the draw for the group stage of the 2027 AFC U20 Asian Cup qualifiers took place at AFC headquarters in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia. According to the announced results, Vietnam U20 is in Group C alongside Iran, DPR Korea, and Palestine.
Right after the draw, the ASEAN FOOTBALL page published an article titled “2027 AFC U20 Asian Cup Qualifiers Draw Results”, while also highlighting the difficulties many Southeast Asian representatives face, especially Vietnam and Thailand.
The page wrote: “The journey to the 2027 U20 Asian Cup finals has been officially determined! Many Southeast Asian representatives have landed in tough groups, particularly Thailand U20 and Vietnam U20.”
ASEAN FOOTBALL also posted the full group details for Vietnam U20, which includes Iran, Vietnam (hosts), DPR Korea, and Palestine. Among them, Iran is considered the top contender of the group due to its rich tradition in youth football, one of the best in Asia.
This draw is not only difficult because of Iran's reputation but also revives a regretful memory for Vietnamese youth football. At the 2023 U20 Asian Cup finals, Vietnam U20 won their first two matches and had 6 points before the final round. However, a defeat to Iran U20 caused coach Hoang Anh Tuan's team to be eliminated bitterly right from the group stage.
Iran's youth team is clearly not just strong on paper. The West Asian representative once dominated continental youth football by winning the U20 Asian Cup four times in a row in 1973, 1974, 1975, and 1976. In the last two editions, they also reached the quarter-finals.
Meanwhile, DPR Korea is also an extremely formidable opponent. This team has won the U20 Asian Cup three times in 1976, 2006, and 2010. Although they did not leave a mark in the most recent edition, North Korean youth teams are still known for their strong physical foundation, disciplined playing style, and fiery fighting spirit.
Palestine is rated lower but is still considered an unpredictable mystery. The West Asian representative can certainly cause difficulties if they perform at their best in crucial matches.
According to the new competition format of the AFC, 32 teams in the qualifying stage will be divided into 8 groups, each consisting of 4 teams playing a single round-robin from August 31 to September 6, 2026. Only the 8 group winners and the 7 best runners-up will earn tickets to the 2027 U20 Asian Cup finals in China.
This means Vietnam U20 does not necessarily have to top the group to advance, but if they compete for the runner-up spot, every point, goal difference, and goals scored are extremely important. In the context of Group C featuring Iran and DPR Korea, the realistic goal for Vietnam U20 might be to maximize points against Palestine while striving for favorable results in the other crucial matches.
Nevertheless, Vietnam U20 still holds a significant advantage as they were chosen by the AFC as one of the host nations for the qualifying groups. In a so-called "group of death," the home advantage could become an important mental anchor for the coaching staff and players of Vietnam U20, helping the young players reduce travel stress, better adapt to weather conditions and pitch quality, and receive support from home fans.
Currently, the core squad of Vietnam U20 is being "tested" through training sessions and international matches, most notably the 2026 ASEAN U19 Championship in Indonesia. This is not only a regional playground but also seen as a crucial stepping stone for the Asian ambitions of Vietnamese youth football.
