Malaysian media consider the U20 Malaysia side to be in a tough group for the 2027 AFC U20 Asian Cup qualifiers with Australia and Indonesia.
Malaysia's New Straits Times (NST) reacted notably after the draw for the 2027 AFC U20 Asian Cup qualifiers, as the U20 Malaysia team was placed in what is considered a highly challenging group. According to the draw held at AFC headquarters in Kuala Lumpur, coach Nafuzi Zain's squad is in Group H alongside defending champions Australia, Indonesia, and hosts Laos.
NST described this as one of the most noteworthy groups in the qualifiers due to the "Southeast Asian derby" between Malaysia and Indonesia. Over the years, clashes between the two youth footballing nations have always brought tension and drawn special attention from regional fans. Facing Indonesia already in the qualifiers is seen as a significant challenge for Malaysia.
According to the plan, Group H matches will be held centrally in Laos from August 31 to September 6, 2026. Australia is still considered the strongest contender in the group as the defending champion U20 Asian Cup. Meanwhile, Indonesia possesses promising young talents, while Laos has the home advantage.
The Football Association of Malaysia (FAM) confirmed the draw results in an official statement: "During the recent draw, the U19 Harimau Malaya team, led by coach Nafuzi Zain, was placed in Group H alongside Australia, Indonesia, and Laos for the U20 Asian Cup qualifiers in Laos".
Malaysian media believe that the goal of qualifying for the finals will not be easy, as only the 8 group winners and 7 best runners-up will advance, alongside host China. The last time Malaysia appeared in the AFC U20 Asian Cup finals was in 2018, so the pressure on the current young players is immense.
Meanwhile, U20 Vietnam has also landed in an equally tough group, placed in Group C with Iran, North Korea, and Palestine. Many Southeast Asian fans believe that both Malaysia and Vietnam will face a challenging journey in this year's qualifiers. Nevertheless, the "Southeast Asian civil wars," especially the Malaysia-Indonesia clash in Group H, are still predicted to become the most anticipated highlights of the tournament.
