The draw for the 2027 AFC U20 Asian Cup Qualifiers took place on the afternoon of May 28 at AFC headquarters in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia, placing the team Vietnam U20 in Group C alongside Iran, North Korea, and Palestine.
According to the AFC's announcement, Vietnam is one of eight countries hosting the groups in the Qualifying Stage, along with Bahrain, Cambodia, Kyrgyz Republic, Laos, Qatar, Thailand, and Uzbekistan. Meanwhile, Bhutan, Mongolia, and Myanmar will host groups in the Development Stage.
Under the tournament format, 32 teams in the Qualifying Stage are divided into eight groups of four, playing a single round-robin in centralized venues from August 31 to September 6, 2026. At the end of the qualifiers, the eight group winners and the seven best runners-up will qualify for the 2027 AFC U20 Asian Cup finals in China.
In Vietnam's group, Iran is regarded as the top contender as a Pot 1 team and one of Asia's most traditional youth football powerhouses. Meanwhile, North Korea and Palestine are also strong competitors, promising a fierce battle for the qualification spot.
Currently, the core squad of Vietnam U20 is actively honing their skills through training camps and international matches, starting with the 2026 ASEAN U19 Championship in Indonesia. This is seen as an important stepping stone for the young players to gain match experience, build resilience, and aim for competition on the continental stage.
