Southeast Asian fans react strongly as the Vietnam team enters the "group of death" in the Asian qualifiers.

Southeast Asian fans have expressed mixed feelings after Vietnam U20 was placed in a very challenging group during the 2027 U20 Asian Cup qualifiers.

At 2 PM today (May 28), the draw for the 2027 U20 Asian Cup qualifiers was held at AFC headquarters in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia. The Vietnam U20 team was in Pot 2 and also one of the host nations for the qualifiers. However, the draw results placed the coach and his players into a group considered the toughest of the tournament.

According to the draw results, Vietnam U20 is in Group C alongside Iran U20, North Korea U20, and Palestine U20. This is considered a "group of death" because Iran is a top Asian powerhouse, North Korea is always known for being unpredictable, and Palestine is capable of surprising any opponent.

Right after the draw, many Southeast Asian fans expressed concern about Vietnam U20's chances of advancing. One account commented: "Vietnam U20 is truly the unluckiest, ending up in an extremely tough group." Meanwhile, another person quipped: "The qualifiers feel like the finals; every group is tense."

Not only Vietnam U20's group, but other Southeast Asian representatives also face many challenges. Particularly in Group H, Indonesia U20, Malaysia U20, and Laos U20 will compete directly with Australia U20. Many opinions suggest that Australia is almost certain to advance, meaning the three Southeast Asian teams must fiercely compete for the remaining spot.

An Indonesian fan remarked: "Group H has three Southeast Asian teams; there's probably only one spot left for the region because Australia is too strong." Another worried: "I'm afraid with such difficult groups, I don't know if Southeast Asia can secure four spots for the U20 Asian Cup finals." Meanwhile, another comment assessed: "Looking at Vietnam U20's group, every team is strong; the chance to advance will be very tough."

Nevertheless, many fans still believe that home advantage could help Vietnam U20 spring a surprise. Given the intense nature of this year's qualifiers, Southeast Asian representatives are expected to endure extremely tense matches if they want to earn a ticket to the 2027 U20 Asian Cup finals.
