Indonesian supporters expressed strong reactions following the 2027 U20 Asian Cup qualifying draw, with both U20 Indonesia and U20 Vietnam encountering very tough groups.
The results of the 2027 U20 Asian Cup qualifying draw are generating much debate within the Southeast Asian football community. Not only has U20 Vietnam been placed in a tough group, but U20 Indonesia also faces a huge challenge right from the qualifying round.
According to the draw results, U20 Vietnam is in Group C along with U20 Iran, U20 North Korea, and Palestine. Meanwhile, U20 Indonesia falls into Group H with U20 Australia, U20 Malaysia, and U20 Laos.
Right after the draw ceremony, many Indonesian fans expressed concerns on social media, judging that both Vietnam and Indonesia have encountered difficult groups.

One Indonesian account commented: “Vietnam facing Iran and North Korea is truly a group of death. But Indonesia is not any easier having to play Australia.”
Many Indonesian fans judge that U20 Iran will be a huge challenge for U20 Vietnam. The West Asian team has won the U20 Asian Cup four times and always possesses many top young talents in the continent.
Another comment read: “If Vietnam can get through this group, they are truly strong. Iran and North Korea are both extremely tough.”
Nevertheless, Indonesian fans also believe that home advantage could help U20 Vietnam spring a surprise. According to the plan, coach Yutaka Ikeuchi's squad will play the qualifiers on home soil.
Meanwhile, Indonesia's group also worries many people just as much. Australia is considered the strongest candidate in Group H, while Malaysia and Laos are familiar opponents in Southeast Asia.
An Indonesian fan remarked: “This will be a true Southeast Asian showdown. Indonesia cannot afford to be complacent against Malaysia and Laos.”
Some fans even predicted that both Vietnam and Indonesia might have to compete for second place in their groups due to the difficulty of beating the top teams.
“Indonesia can challenge for the top spot with Australia, while Vietnam must aim for at least second place,”wrote an account on an Indonesian football forum.
Additionally, many fans also assessed that this year's 2027 U20 Asian Cup qualifiers are much more intense, as only eight group winners and seven best runners-up will secure tickets to the finals in China.
Another fan commented: “Southeast Asia faces strong opponents this year. But who knows, Vietnam and Indonesia might together create surprises.”
The 2027 U20 Asian Cup qualifiers will take place from August 31 to September 6, 2026. This tournament also serves as the qualifier for the 2027 U20 World Cup, where only the strongest Asian teams will have the chance to participate.
