Japanese player bluntly refuses to wear the Malaysian national team jersey

Japanese midfielder Yuki Tanigawa declined the chance to obtain Malaysian citizenship even though he meets the requirements to play for the country's national side.

The Malaysian national team has just received disappointing news regarding its plan to strengthen the squad through naturalized players. Japanese midfielder Yuki Tanigawa, who has been frequently mentioned by Malaysian media recently, has officially rejected the possibility of playing for the national team, despite already fulfilling FIFA's criteria for naturalization.

Yuki Tanigawa began his career in Malaysia in 2020, playing for Kuching City FC. After more than five years of continuous residence and work in this Southeast Asian country, the 1997-born player qualifies to apply for Malaysian citizenship. Beyond his professional ties, Tanigawa has also established a stable life here, having married a Malaysian wife.

Yuki Tanigawa has played over 100 matches in Malaysia since 2020.

Therefore, many sources in Malaysia speculated that Tanigawa was part of the plan to reinforce the Harimau Malaya squad ahead of the 2026 AFF Cup and the 2026 FIFA ASEAN Cup. However, the 29-year-old quickly dismissed these rumors, stating: "At present, I remain a Japanese citizen. I love Malaysia, but I cannot comment further on the issue of becoming a naturalized player."

Tanigawa's refusal to take up naturalization is seen as a significant setback for Malaysia, especially as the team faces difficulties in preparing its squad for upcoming major tournaments. In particular, for the 2026 AFF Cup, Malaysia risks being unable to call up all its key players, since the tournament is not included in the FIFA match calendar.

Since 2020, Yuki Tanigawa has appeared in more than 100 matches in Malaysia.

For Kuching City FC, Yuki Tanigawa plays a vital role. He is capable of performing both as a center-back and a defensive midfielder, bringing extensive experience from his 114 appearances in Malaysia and scoring 8 goals. This consistency made him a highly promising naturalization target for Malaysian football in recent times.

Kuching City FC head coach Aidil Sharin Sahak also publicly supported the idea of Tanigawa playing for the Malaysian national team if the player agreed to naturalization. However, the tactician emphasized that the final decision rests with Tanigawa himself. In light of this, Malaysian football will likely have to shift its focus to other naturalization targets such as Bergson da Silva, Manuel Hidalgo, or Giancarlo Gallifuoco to prepare for the important tournaments in 2026.
