From the historic first Conference League victory to the tearful goodbye of coach Oliver Glasner, Crystal Palace had a night of intense emotions in Leipzig.
In the early hours of May 28, Crystal Palace defeated Rayo Vallecano 1-0 in the Conference League final to write the greatest chapter in club history. However, instead of just celebrating their first European trophy, fans of the London club also faced the unexpected departure of coach Oliver Glasner immediately after the match in Leipzig.
A festive atmosphere had enveloped the German city for hours before the match as thousands of Palace fans filled the streets in red, blue, and white. A tifo with the words “Liquidation Cancelled, FA Cup Landed, Europa League Boarding” (translation: “Escaped, touched the FA Cup, and ready for the Europa League adventure”) as if recreating the entire miraculous revival journey of the club since the threat of bankruptcy in 2010. And then after the final whistle, coach Glasner unleashed a wave of emotions with his farewell announcement.
“I can't even believe this is my last match. But yes, I have made this decision, and I think it is a chapter, a very worthwhile chapter in the Crystal Palace book, but there will be other chapters to follow,” the Austrian strategist shared emotionally after the historic match.
True to the nature of a European final, Crystal Palace started quite cautiously against Rayo Vallecano. The Spanish side controlled possession better and constantly applied pressure with quick attacks down the right flank. Isi Palazón and Alemão both had dangerous chances but couldn't beat Palace's defense in the first half.
On the other hand, the English team struggled to build attacks. It wasn't until the end of the first half that Tyrick Mitchell created a notable chance with a header that went just wide following a pass from Adam Wharton. However, Palace completely transformed after the break and the decisive moment soon arrived.
Right at the start of the second half, Adam Wharton unleashed a shot that Augusto Batalla couldn't hold, before Jean-Philippe Mateta pounced to tap in the rebound into the net for Rayo Vallecano. The French striker then performed his trademark corner flag kick celebration amidst the roaring Palace fans. After the goal, Yeremy Pino almost doubled the lead with a free kick that hit both posts.
When the final whistle blew, Crystal Palace players collapsed onto the pitch in sheer joy. For coach Glasner, this was not just a European trophy but also the perfect farewell.“Sometimes, okay, you have to go a long way around, and now we are here. Crystal Palace is exactly where they belong,” the Austrian manager concluded his emotional final chapter.
