The former midfielder stirred up online frenzy with a subtle photo aimed at Bruno following their intense argument.
Manchester United is in turmoil once more, and this time the spotlight is on the fierce war of words between Bruno Fernandes and legendary figure Roy Keane.
After the victory over Brighton & Hove Albion in the final round of the Premier League, Bruno was credited with his 21st assist of the season for Patrick Dorgu. However, the goal quickly sparked controversy as multiple replays showed the ball had touched goalkeeper Bart Verbruggen's hand before crossing the line.
Many argued it should have been ruled an own goal rather than an assist for Bruno. Even former Manchester United midfielder Eric Djemba-Djemba stated bluntly: "If the rules say so, then that play shouldn't count as an assist."
Nevertheless, the Premier League and Opta later confirmed the goal was awarded to Dorgu, meaning Bruno Fernandes officially reached 21 assists in the current Premier League season.
The real drama unfolded shortly after. Keane, the famously tough legend of Old Trafford, publicly criticized the Portuguese midfielder for allegedly caring more about personal achievements than the team. Keane was particularly irritated by Bruno's comments after the match against Nottingham Forest, where the player admitted there were situations where he "should have passed instead of shooting."
According to the Irish legend, such thinking is unsuitable for a Manchester United captain. He mocked: "He won't win any titles with this kind of team mentality. They conceded two goals, yet everyone is excited because he equaled the assist record. Unbelievable. It's like a circus."
These remarks angered Bruno. In a later interview, he insisted that Keane had "lied" and twisted his words saying: "I always accept criticism from others, and I've never retaliated. Everyone has their own opinions—good, bad, or whatever. In this case, what Roy Keane said is a lie. Fortunately, everything is recorded."
More notably, the Portuguese midfielder revealed he had asked former manager Ole Gunnar Solskjaer to get Keane's phone number so they could talk privately and resolve the misunderstanding. However, the United legend not only refused to back down but responded in a way that set social media on fire. He posted a picture of a donkey standing under a spotlight, with two lions watching from behind, along with a cryptic caption: "Too much attention makes the donkey think it's a lion."
Immediately, fans believed Roy Keane was directly targeting Bruno Fernandes. The battle between the legend and the current Manchester United captain has thus become more tense than ever, and the internal drama at Old Trafford seems far from over.
