Serie A's Roma could be Manchester United's "money spinner" this summer. Marseille of Ligue 1 might be forced to sell Mason Greenwood in the summer transfer window, and the Red Wolves have become a hot favorite for his next club. Marseille failed to qualify for the Champions League next season, and to stabilize their finances, they may have to part ways with Greenwood.

Greenwood scored 26 goals and provided 11 assists in the recently concluded 2025/26 campaign, with 16 of those goals in Ligue 1, tying him for first place. However, his relationship with the club has become strained, and many European clubs are interested in him. Among them, Roma are in a leading position.
According to *La Gazzetta dello Sport*, Roma have already contacted Greenwood's father, and the player himself is reportedly enthusiastic about playing in Serie A. The "Red Wolves" finished third in the league, securing a spot in next season's Champions League, and they now have better financial conditions to reinforce their squad.
Greenwood joined Marseille from Manchester United in 2024 for a transfer fee of £26.6 million. The initial relationship between the two parties was good, but things changed last season. The former United striker's attitude was questioned, and he was reportedly involved in a fallout with the club's sporting director.
Moreover, due to failing to secure Champions League qualification, Marseille are under pressure to sell players. It is said that the club's finances are in a precarious state, and they need to complete several player sales before June 30 to meet the financial requirements of Ligue 1's regulatory body.
Manchester United included a sell-on clause in the transfer deal, meaning they are entitled to 50% of any future transfer fee for Greenwood. Marseille reportedly hope to sell Greenwood for £43 million, and his contract runs until 2029.

In Turkey, Hakan Saffi, a candidate for the presidency of Fenerbahçe, has stated that he would bring in Greenwood as part of his plan to revive the club. However, Roma are more confident, as they are a top-five European league team, and they hope their existing relationship with Marseille will work in their favor.
Greenwood was named to the Ligue 1 Team of the Season, but he acknowledged the challenges he faced. "It has been a tough season for the team as a whole sometimes, especially in recent months, but on a personal level, I think I have performed well this season," he said. "The Team of the Season includes many excellent players, so it's a great honor to be selected."
Greenwood even hinted that he might stay. "Ligue 1 is a great league, and we played many wonderful matches. For me, it's one of the best leagues I've ever played in, and I hope I can continue to stay here."
Staying was merely diplomatic talk during the award ceremony. The probability of Greenwood transferring is high, but a return to Manchester United is impossible. United have permanently closed the door on working with him again and have never considered it a possibility, because he brings too much controversy and the club needs stability.
In addition to Greenwood, Roma also have the opportunity to directly sign Dutch striker Joshua Zirkzee from Manchester United. The 25-year-old scored only two goals for United this season and is considered completely unsuited to the Premier League style. A return to Serie A would better suit his playing style. Roma have always been interested in Zirkzee and tried to sign him in the winter window.

Manchester United hope to sell Zirkzee for around £20 million. If Roma sign him at that price and also bring in Greenwood, the Red Devils would receive about £40 million in transfer fees, which would certainly help Carrick's summer recruitment and reinforcements.
