With Mohamed Salah's exit from Anfield, Liverpool enters a significant reconstruction phase, as Arne Slot must hastily identify a player capable of filling the Egyptian legend's shoes.
The departure of Mohamed Salah has left a massive void at Liverpool. After 442 appearances and 380 goal contributions, the Egyptian star was not only the main scorer but also the centerpiece of the Reds' entire attacking system for nearly a decade. Now, manager Arne Slot and Liverpool's board are racing in the transfer market to find Salah's "successor." The three most prominent names currently are Yan Diomande, Anthony Gordon, and Bradley Barcola.
The most frequently mentioned target is Yan Diomande of RB Leipzig. The 19-year-old Ivorian talent just completed an impressive season with 13 goals and 10 assists across all competitions, attracting attention from numerous European giants. Liverpool is believed to hold a certain advantage thanks to positive transfer relations with Leipzig following deals like Naby Keïta, Ibrahima Konaté, and Dominik Szoboszlai. However, the asking price of £86 million makes this deal far from easy, especially since Leipzig faces no pressure to sell after securing a Champions League spot.
Meanwhile, Anthony Gordon is seen as a more realistic option. The Newcastle United star has been on Liverpool's radar since 2024 due to his pace, versatility, and Premier League experience. Newcastle's financial situation could also open the door for Liverpool. The St James' Park side is reportedly considering selling a major star this summer to free up budget, and Gordon might be the most suitable candidate.
The remaining name is Bradley Barcola of Paris Saint-Germain. The French forward has frustrated Liverpool on multiple occasions in the Champions League, but that very fact makes the English club well aware of his class and value. Liverpool had considered Barcola last summer but didn't want to hinder the development of young talent Rio Ngumoha. However, after losing both Salah and Luis Díaz, Slot's current priority is to immediately add players who can make an instant impact.
"One of the reasons people talk so much about wingers is that Mo is about to leave. Signing at least one player makes sense,"Slot recently shared.
What worries Liverpool most right now is time. Diomande, Gordon, and Barcola are all likely to feature in the upcoming World Cup, and their value could skyrocket if they perform brilliantly. Liverpool understands they can no longer afford to hesitate if they want to quickly rebuild their attack and aim for the 2026/2027 title.
